Currently reading The Snow Country. Beautiful translation by Edward G. Seidensticker. I posted a page from it yesterday. For something a little on the weirder side The House of Sleeping Beauties. Enjoy!

Thanks for the Mills family recommendation and the follow. Kes is an all time favourite, too.
Just after 2am, this passage from Kawabata's Snow Country blew me away...
Paul Newman as Billy the Kid clutching a hand gun an looking heavenward from the movie The Left Handed Gun.
... maybe the origin of my sympathy for outlaws. That and Arthur Penn's The Left-Handed Gun. I wanted to be left-handed after that and tried to convince everyone I was actually ambidextrous. Both shot in glorious black and white - one in working-class Lancashire and the other in the American West.
Still from the film Whistle Down the Wind with a very young Haley Mills leading a group of children to meet a criminal on the run she thinks is Jesus returned to Earth. An early acting appearance for Alan Bates.
Last night I watched Whistle Down the Wind. I saw it when it first came out in the cinema. It made a huge impression on me an erstwhile Catholic child. I was in total sympathy with the criminal on the run who the kids thought was Jesus returned to Earth. 7-yr-old me so wanted him to get away...

I went out tonight. It was glorious.
Great line-up. I caught a bunch of these bands in London later that year or in 1977 - Wayne County (and the Electric Chairs), Talking Heads, The Ramones, (Johnny Thunder's) Heartbreakers, Blondie (+Television, Patti Smith etc etc...)

Love this photo taken in Tokyo today (or really tomorrow, given it’s Sunday there) by @alfie.photography
Sorry to hear about the bad experiences. Maybe this side of the divide is a little less fraught - although... you never know.
