We'll focus on institutional reform, improving public services and building more progressive markets - always aiming to make practical, politically salient recommendations for actually getting things done.
Transforming the state to renew the nation

With state capacity at breaking point, reform well overdue, and the prospect of more extreme and destructive approaches looming on the horizon, there's never been a more important time to do what we do
It's a really proud moment for an organisation that launched in Nov 2023 with just three staff - @gracewyld.bsky.social, @yeowell.bsky.social and myself - and has now grown into a fully-fledged think tank looking to help government at all levels deliver better outcomes for people across the country
At @futuregovforum.bsky.social we've just published our new 3-yr strategy, setting out:
- Our aspirations and work programmes
- The approaches, design principles and values that underpin them
- The wonderful team of people who will deliver them
- Reflections on the impact we've had so far
Our new ‘Reform and renewal of the Equality and Human Rights Commission’ report contains recommendations for big changes to the EHRC

Why the EHRC’s future is at risk unless big changes are made

The @EHRC is a vital institution, but its future is at risk unless major changes made to strengthen the vital work it does.

It's been great to be at the #TotalPlaceNow conference today where we’re discussing why if we want to make people happier, healthier and better off, we need to put local voices at the heart of the conversation around public service design and delivery.
@wearenewlocal.bsky.social
FGF’s Hamida Ali is currently chairing a panel at #TotalPlaceNow conference on why place-based budgets can be drivers of public service reform.
Central government is ready to engage with this agenda – now we’re hearing from experts across local and national government about how to make this happen.
NEW - In @labourlist.bsky.social, John Denham explains ‘Why Total Place is vital for Labour’s chance of reforming public services’, ahead of today’s #TotalPlaceNow conference.

So much going on at the moment, that it was easy to miss the Chancellor's spring statement last week. The bigger policy announcements will wait until the Mais lecture later in March, but here's @danrcorry.bsky.social's take on what we heard last week: futuregovforum.substack.com/p/fgfs-sprin...
On #InternationalWomen'sDay the chair of FGF’s Social Insights Panel, @pollyneate.bsky.social has written an article in @bigissue.com on why a radical shift to prevention is the only way to end violence against women & girls.

You can read Emily's reform proposals (with @bethgardiner-smith.bsky.social), plus thoughts from other great contributors - inc. @sundersays.bsky.social & @anneliesedoddsmp.bsky.social - in our 2025 essay collection 'The Future of Asylum'

Terrific piece here by my @futuregovforum.bsky.social colleague @emilyagraham.bsky.social as the Home Secretary announces a(nother) tough line on asylum.
Emily points out why this is a gamble; and that there are progressive alternatives available...

Now that the revised Green Book is here, how’s it looking? Dan has written for @civilserviceworld.bsky.social and argues it is an encouraging start.
But it will still be *political will* more than anything that determines whether investment materialises: www.civilserviceworld.com/news/article...
These changes are something we at FGF have argued are necessary (but not sufficient) to see investment spread right across the UK as part of the govt's growth agenda
Our Chief Economist @danrcorry.bsky.social set out the arguments back in December: www.futuregovernanceforum.co.uk/resource/cha...
There's been a lot going on of late, so you'd be forgiven for missing the fact that earlier this month the Treasury issued an updated version of its 'Green Book' - which could have a significant impact on how public money is invested beyond London and the South East

Thanks Sam - hard agree on not overloading the centre any further.
I think you need a strong and purposeful centre of govt that is confident to do the things only it can, and then move much more away to more local level.
Don't think a new Dept for the PM has to do more than now (it shouldn't!)
Ben says the question isn't whether a revolution is coming or not, it's "whether Labour or a triumphant Nigel Farage will lead it".
We called it a choice between 'disrupt and deliver' or 'disrupt and destroy'. At FGF we're making the case for the former, and setting out how govt can get there.
'In Power 01', led by FGF director @yeowell.bsky.social and chair (and former Deputy Cab Sec) Helen MacNamara, was the result of over 100 interviews with experts and argued for a new centre of govt structured around strategy & politics; policy & delivery; diplomatic & security; and private office.
His main recommendation - "we need to go Australian with a Department of the Prime Minister" - is the same conclusion we reached at @futuregovforum.bsky.social after our in-depth look at how Downing Street functions last year

"Slow, secretive and sclerotic, the government machinery itself is jammed. Our good intentions, in a busted system, are not enough. You need scepticism, a plan and some history."
