Quality bike lanes can magically create new cyclists out of thin air.
"The installation of protected and buffered bicycle lanes was consistently and significantly associated with increased bicycle commuting."

Will the repaving comply with Complete Streets safety requirements this time?
Most prescient, clear/eyed work of writing I’ve read on reorg.
Read it.
Then act.
“Call your senators. Call your representative. Not next week or later. Now.
Tell them this is not a reorganization — it’s the destruction of a federal agency by executive fiat and that Congress must intervene.”
Link is broken
When Bad Bunny scaled a utility pole during his Super Bowl show, it was more than a stunt. His performance highlighted Puerto Rico's frequent power cuts, which have been exacerbated by energy privatization. We're fighting for an equitable and just clean energy system for all Puerto Ricans.
Loving the opportunity to skate outdoors in Maryland this past week. Could do without the wild wind today though!

western MD scenic railroad + b’more pond hockey = a perfect winter weekend
Personally I think this is too much money for Donald trumps untrained heavily armed militia
6.5” of snow here in SW Baltimore and sleeting as of 9AM.
Paging @capitalweather.bsky.social et al.
Book 2: The Fellowship of the Ring. A classic whose movie adaptation I have watched many times without reading the source material. A delightful read full of nuance and additional storytelling not captured in the film.
(Feat: My spider plant coming home with me while my office moves location).
Bike treads are visible through a light dusting of snow on a dirt path.
Desire paths for walking and biking are all around you, even in the snow.
Build pedestrian/cycling infrastructure now!
Great green space round table today in Irvington hosted by Cooperative Community Development. Check out the awesome work they are doing in this part of southwest Baltimore: www.ccdgroup.org
Two days ago it was Elissa Slotkin. Last week it was Jerome Powell. Before that, Mark Kelly. Weaponizing the justice system against your opponents is an authoritarian tactic.
The only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.

The original Pebble Round was probably the coolest device I have ever owned. This is going to be the best smartwatch of all time, hands down. I have already preordered one in addition to my incoming Pebble Time 2.
So thrilled that @repebble.com is back (thank you @ericmigi.com)!
The book cover of The Boys in the Boat, featuring nine rowers powering a boat through the water.
Book 1 was The Boys in the Boat, the unsung story of the 1936 US Olympic rowing team. It seamlessly blends a coming of age narrative set in the Depression-era PNW with descriptions of rowing strategy/philosophy and the Nazi’s use of propaganda around the Olympics. Highly recommend!
I did a horrible job of reading books this year, so I’m stealing @codyboteler.bsky.social’s format and posting 2026’s reads here (starting shamelessly with my last read of 2025 to boost my numbers this year).

You shake yourself awake in the cold North Atlantic water. You are not online. It is July of 1858. You are a baleen whale, and you have changed your mind. The future most not come to pass. The telegraph cable must break.
The big problem with NEPA reform -- which I'd like to see NEPA reformers grapple with a bit more -- is that if you open the thing up, most of the legislators doing the "reforming" are hostile to it & just want to get rid of env. review entirely. It's not a good-faith process.
Any chance you’re coming to Baltimore on this leg of the tour? Or can we get you out next time? 😀
There is a better way to travel between major US cities. It's not that we can't build high speed rail here... It's been a deliberate choice of political will, car industry lobbying and regulatory hurdles designed to make it seem impossible... But it is indeed a choice.

FWIW, my thinking on this was that having both a 5 hour closure in the morning/early afternoon and a 5hr closure overnight would shorten the long construction timeline. But maybe bridge construction is not the limiting factor compared to some of the other parts of the project.
Yeah I get that, but couldn’t they do work on the actual bridge part - i.e. between Long Bridge Park and East Potomac Park - overnight? Sounds like they’re foreclosing that possibility even in the non residential segments of the project.
It’s ridiculous that (according to the linked information) they can’t do construction between 7PM-7AM in the middle of the Potomac River. What resident is going to be kept up at night by loud construction there… beavers? Are there no exceptions to that DC ordinance?
Is that Rialto Beach!? I’ve got a near identical photo (just bluer) from this March.
