Proud will not stand silent whilst our members are under attack in wider society, and we hope the General Secretary will address the concerns of LGBT+ members and show in solidarity with LGBT+ members.

We have asked for a full written response, but have also repeated our request made previously to meet with her to discuss directly the very genuine and serious concerns LGBT+ members have in PCS.
We would encourage members of Proud to share this letter widely amongst other members, branches, groups and regions/nations and our allies in other unions.
We are also asking for solidarity from PCS members, branches, groups and our allies in other unions.
On 8 September 2025 PCS Proud wrote to the union's General Secretary, Fran Heathcote, with the following letter raising a number of concerns which have been raised with us over the last few months - cloud.pcs-proud.org.uk/s/9g7ygZk5fN...

Well quite... Section 28 was the law, unions campaigned against it... The law condoned (if it didn't actually promote) sacking civil servants for being gay, unions campaigned against it... The government made union membership illegal for GCHQ staff, unions campaigned against it...
That makes more sense!!!
Turns out unions can disagree with the Supreme Court without legal advice being used to prevent discussion. Funny that!
As was shown when the motion on the Sullivan review was passed overwhelmingly, and the same as every year when trans supportive motions pass, shows members and the rep base of the union support our trans members.
Please reach out to the PNC as well if you feel you'd like advice or support from us.
We would encourage comrades to remain members, although obviously understand the fury people will feel.
As usual, when motion on the Sullivan review got to conference floor, it was supported nearly unanimously.
PCS members support trans rights, and we need to fight for a leadership which does too!
Thanks to Ashleeee for posting our statement!
We'd usually share it here the same time we do elsewhere, but it's lengthy! So thanks to them for doing the hard work for us. It's been a long week 🥲
PCS will fight these attacks on our trans members, and the wider trans community.
If you are feeling affected by this ruling and need support, below are links of organisations that could help.

We must welcome the diversity of gender in all its forms, expressions and identities. There is so much to celebrate about being trans, and to express oneself in the way one wishes. The result of this court ruling doesn’t change who we are, or who we can be.
... Historic act which has protected tens of thousands from discrimination since its implementation.
Many PCS members rely on the Equality Act 2010, and while it is outdated and could be improved, it should not be amended with the view of eroding the rights of trans people.
...argued by groups like For Women Scotland.
The impact of this judgment could be far-reaching and will create unnecessary confusion and distress for trans people with a GRC. Proud stands firmly against attempts to amend the Equality Act 2010 whilst we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the ...
...Ruth Crawford KC presented the position that a trans woman with a Gender Recognition Certificate is a woman “for all purposes”; that trans women are women and trans men are men. We continue to support this, and PCS policy is clear that our union rejects the kind of biological essentialism ...
