My journal paper argues for a systems approach to AI and education in a post-digital world. AI is not a single tool but a series of disruptions. Outlines an agenda to reduce systemic blockers, build resilience, design more robust policy. #aieducation www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Our enterprising technology teacher did build a personalised response system comprising 30 boxes connected by wires back to his desk and an array of lights. Very cool.

I never had the pleasure of using a language lab. EdTech in my school was one teletype terminal for the school where we typed programs in FORTRAN then the teacher put the paper tape in the post and we received the printed error messages a week later (yes, really).

Fascinating that the technology is so different but the rhetoric is just the same.

That's how I learned to code - I learned the George 4 language on a teaching machine before I had ever seen or used a computer.

Things we learned about LLMs in 2024 A lot has happened in the world of Large Language Models over the course of 2024. Here’s a review of things we figured out about the field in the past …

Excellent summary of the year in generative AI and its current state. Essential reading for those who think they know all about Large Language Models, and for those who don't. simonwillison.net/2024/Dec/31/...

Yes, an excellent resource. As for the other profile, I don't know, which is why I didn't include it.

Building well-conceived tools for students on an open foundation model with user data remaining within the institution is a good thing. Training a large language model at huge cost for each state isn't.

Is the EU now so fragmented that each member country feels the need for its own LLM to protect national security?

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

I hear that EU countries are planning to build their own national LLMs - France (already, with Mistral), Germany, Netherlands, Norway and doubtless others, in the belief that only their own AI model will match their language, culture and security. National necessity, or a waste of money and energy?

I'm concerned about the further industrialisation of teaching - where online tutors work to the rhythm of AI advisors.

I thoroughly enjoyed the event. Some excellent insights from Tom and Hazel at the N-TUTORR project, transforming learning.

Valid concerns. AI cheating is now not new, and universities have to rethink assessment. I don't hear concerns about senior management using AI to cut academic jobs - in fact the converse, of increased workload in adapting to an AI-saturated world.

HuggingChat interface

HuggingChat interface

From my talks with unis about GenAI, main concerns are data security and accuracy of responses. Worth considering open-model GenAI - free to use, can run locally, now as powerful as GPT-4, no data sent outside, can be customised. HuggingChat gives chat access to multiple models. huggingface.co/chat/
