Because if it's the latter, then the question needs to be asked whether this can be turned around. There's no way to make it not sound cold, but these questions need to be considered when deciding where to put money in the climate fight.

Before I decide whether to make a small token gesture or dig deep, can I get your response as someone I trust.

AYCC did wonderful work for years, but I haven't been aware of anything they've done for the last five or so. Am I just not paying attention, or has there been a real decline in output?

800,000 settlers in the West Bank certainly represents a huge obstacle to a two state solution. Yet it constantly puzzles me that people think getting 800,000 Israelis to choose between leaving or living under Arab rule is impossible but getting 7 million to do the same thing will be easy.

Let’s Talk About Saline Placebos Yet Again All kinds of vaccine studies, including many with saline placebos, have been done that show vaccines work well and are safe, with few risks.

Let’s Talk About Saline Placebos Yet Again: it's unethical to do a saline placebo trial for a new vaccine when there's a licensed vaccine for that disease; many vaccines have been compared to saline, and are generally well tested. via @aboutpediatrics.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/stopanti...

They did a trial a few years ago. What I can't work out is why, given how successful that was, they didn't quickly start rolling it out more widely.

It's great to see this finally happening. They've been talking about it long enough.

I didn't think it was, but did think some might see it as at least mitigating. I don't.

That may be the most insightful thing I have read on him yet. And it doesn't make me think he's any more qualified to be a senator.

Also, carnivores beating herbivores 34% to 19% probably explains a lot about US politics.

Someone should do an analysis of dinosaur preferences by political affiliation.

Mainly concerned that pterosaurs are more popular among people who claim to love dinosaurs than those that do not.

I feel like confidence someone won't end up supporting sending millions of people to concentration camps should be a bare minimum, but it seems that's too much for some people.

Actually, I did like him until this stuff came out. I thought, "Candidates who have never run before are always a risk, but he's hitting the right issues and Mills is too old, so hopefully it'll turn out well."

Sadly, it hasn't.

I mean I would have thought that Stew Peters' attacks on other minorities like LGBTI and Indians would be a concern, but maybe that doesn't matter as long as he's big on Holocaust denial.

The fact that AIPAC calls any criticism of Israel anti-semitic doesn't make real antisemitism ok.

Like not only going on an anti-semitic podcast, but saying he is "a long-time fan"? Like retweeting neo-Nazis?

I get that you don't see a contradiction between whipping up hate against Jews and being left wing, but some of us see things differently.

I took one look at the tatoo and thought, "his excuse is pretty unlikely, but if he really is a white supremicist it'll come out in other ways," and it has.

I didn't have high requirements of anyone pushing out Sinema, but I'd have hoped things would be better than this.

This dude won’t help. He does science by vibe. Not evidence. It’s like securing a meeting with a minor demon in Hell, hoping he’ll ask Satan to help end your suffering.

In scientific papers, I agree, but as a media release to illustrate for the public, I think it's more borderline. Had a very explanatory illustration a researcher provided that we couldn't use recently because it said had been made with AI assistance.

@iflscience.com is strictly no AI, to the extent that if a researcher has used AI to illustrate their work we won't use it, even if no other illustrations are available (I'm worried it's unsustainable to be quite this firm).

Of course all of us around the world are affected by Reagan (and Thatcher) and also by the US culture of the era. But in Australia at the same time we had a very popular center-left government (more center than left). That provides a control a political scientist should study, as do other countries.

Having discussed this quite a bit, I find this the most plausible explanation, particularly for why early Gen X's skew more right than late ones. One way to test it is to look at the politics of Gen X in countries that had different flavors of government at the time.

As a non-American who would increasingly like to be your friend as I aquaint myself with your posts, only stupid people blame the 75 million people who voted for Harris for the president. (That said, I think Satan probably deserves hemerrhoids - Trump certainly does).

I am of course glad that anyone who was thinking about ending it and didn't is still here. But I am even more glad about you, because although I don't know you (just followed a minute ago) someone who can write this is even more to be treasured.

Some Viruses Get An Advantage By Convincing Others That Food Is Scarce Maybe there’s a lesson here about not believing everything you hear people say.

An amazing example of communication and game playing in phages, which are so simple people still debate if they count as being alive www.iflscience.com/viruses-list...

1928: we can never have a Catholic president, he would take orders from the Pope!

2026: any chance the Pope can fill out the rest of the term as president?

Amazing clip of former Shell employee and now right-wing News Corp blogger Liam Barlett blaming the fossil fuel crisis on renewables (while Australia's energy minister very patiently tries to ask him WTF he means)

(for some reason News Corp decided to publicly share this instead of burying it)

Since We Won’t Get To Mars On Musk’s Timeline Here’s Why 2084 Might Be A Good Goal Yes it’s a long way off, but so is Mars, and with more than 50 years between Moon landings, we might need the time.

If you think that, it's good to have a deadline to work towards that is not too demanding. Here's why 2084 might be a good one. www.iflscience.com/since-we-won...

Artemis II puts the focus back on human space exploration. Some people think humans should never go to Mars. Some want us to go as soon as possible. But there are good arguments for a compromise, to say, "Yes we should go, but carefully and thoughtfully, not in a rush like Apollo to the Moon".

I think you'll have a hard time finding where I said the production studio was full of predators, because I didn't. What I said was that one of your pieces of "evidence" for why it wasn't is deeply unconvincing. Describing your genitals to someone uninvited isn't better because they're pregnant.
