I hope people will support me with my next endeavor outside of indie. I know not everyone will, or can, and that's fine. But animation doesn't feed into my life anymore. It never gave back. It didn't give me stability or peace. Now I'm only doing it on my terms and I'm so much happier.
Make an indie project because you want to. Make it yourself, with friends, with other artists that wanna make something. If you have the cash for it, go for it. But don't expect to make money back, and DEFINITELY don't go into it thinking you'll be able to sustain yourself on it.
Indie animation was never gonna pay my bills, not really. Certainly not my own project. I was very lucky, indie animation DID pay my bills for about two years, while I worked on as many freelance projects as I could. But it wasn't stable, was check to check & had me burning the candle at both ends.
This is why Andromeda Squad didn't cost a dime and I shelved the project I invested $4k into before I got caught up in sunk cost fallacy.
This is also why I don't work in indie animation (or studio animation for that matter) anymore, and why I'm working on growing my small business instead.
I thought that the "man falls in love with a woman, who is violently revealed to be a man in a dress, maliciously tricking him, and upon that reveal the man says he's going to kill them" trope was left in the past.
But here we are, Smiling Friends proving me wrong.

And I'm gonna be honest, this whole process has been breathtakingly lonely.
Animation folks online don't really know how to engage with someone who had to leave the industry, so any posts about what I've gone through is just screaming into the void.
I feel this huge emptiness of a lack of closure. I'm good at storyboarding -- Not in a prideful, egotistical way, but just understanding where I stood among my peers. Not the worst, not the best, but good.
But the industry just... Didn't want me?
Idk, just hurting today. It's a grieving process.
I'm going through a very long healing process when it comes to my animation career.
As I'm working on my indie project today, I'm still very proud of my storyboarding.
I KNOW I'm good at it.
I'm just left with this empty feeling and this question of "What did I do wrong?"
