Social media might be low-key evil but I think there's a good chance that a lot of people are going to learn something about Alexandre Dumas today.

so, fellow historians, this is a 12-alarm fire if "learn about history" is the top use of AI (related to the Humanities).

this should be an all-hands-on-deck conversation with @historians.org and every history department to work K-16 to get us away from history as just "names and dates"

Honestly, after that Trump post, I’m begging @nytimes.com, @apnews.com, @reuters.com, @washingtonpost.com, @npr.org and all of the other newspapers and media outlets to take this seriously. This is not normal and we need to stop pretending. This is a crisis.

I’d never thought to use primary sources for historical research. Very cool.

There is so much new scholarship published every month, it would be easy to miss all of it. I've decided to collect the things I find each month, and compile it into a list for perusal. It shows how vibrant and dynamic (academic) medieval studies can be!

A person’s knees are wrapped with gauze, beneath which has been placed pieces of thickly-sliced garlic. It looks ridiculous. Is it because I like garlic so much that they think I’ll start wearing it now? Or are the big garlic corporations trying to take over medicine? If so, will they start to add garlic to hospital food? I hope so. Why put it only on patients’ knees if you could also make them a delicious spaghetti aglio e olio?

People frequently ridicule medieval writings on health and healing. Thankfully, 21st-century remedies for pain actually work, like the one in this advert for relieving pain in the knee due to arthritis.

For the life of me, I can't figure how capitalism works without consumers.

Also, "consumers" means pretty much every person in the United States. And you are the LAST concern of the Trump administration. Nice of them to admit it. Finally.

If I had a nickel for every time Franz Ferdinand was involved in the precursor events of a world war, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice

Yes. And we have to talk about this now, because talking about it is the first step to making it seem like a callous crime rather than a surprising emergency.

Portrait of Henry VII

Portrait of Henry VII

Discussed Henry VII today and assigned undergrads to skim and discuss some of his patent rolls. Has anyone ever described him as a mafia don before today? One of my students enjoyed all the favors and shakedowns.

chart showing the population of horses in the united states over time. It starts with 20 million in 1900, and declines to under 2 million in 1960. The chart also shows how many cars as well, starting at zero until 1912, and over 75 million by 1960.

Also, it's rather telling that this techbro used horses as a metaphor for the working population, considering that horse populations crashed after they were automated by cars.

Anyway. That is why Aragorn can't really have something that we'd understand in the modern sense as a "tax policy," either progressive or regressive: he is constrained by (lack of) state capacity.
