Similar to the UK in some respects. Sizeable % of public get in a froth over immigration, government reacts by enacting policies that it knows is committing self-harm but that will help quell public anger. Then many get upset when restaurants start closing! 🙄

I was an English teacher in Shimane for 3 years 20 years ago and I saw it firsthand. Was teaching in elementary schools in the mountains with numbers as low as 5 students. They kept them open as long as they could. Soon after I left, 2 or 3 were closed down. Sad reality.

In Japan, I think they get a tablet computer from the third year (8/9).

I think that's an interesting point but it doesn't explain why there are European clubs buying South Americans for several millions of Euros who may not speak the language of that country or coaching team and have no European cultural experience. There are other key factors in the low J fees!

For decades, cinema has told powerful stories of migration.

The Migration Movies Database brings these stories together to support teaching, learning, and public discussions through a searchable archive of migration-related films.

You're gunna end up with a 3-0 victory in 6 months, aren't you?!

Right?! I suspect it could be because a red-carded player or member of staff must be removed from the "vicinity of the pitch" or such like before play continues.

I wonder how many of the away support were fans who lived in Kantō? 🤔 Reckon there must have been a few!

I couldn't see on DAZN what the issue was with Morooka. Was he on or off the pitch? I guess he had to go back to the changing room as it was a red but he possibly thought that you can go the long way round like for substitutions? 🤔 Not saying it wasn't deliberate though... 😂

The most inspiring and joy-filled exhibition I have been to this year, in the basement of Japan House on Ken High St, dedicated to the work of over 100 of the country's active craftspeople. Free entry.

Wow. Fair play to you for watching that in the early hours! 😅 I suspect a lot of players are shattered at this point of the season. Also factor in it's a friendly before the WC and players don't wanna get injured. If you're first choice anyway, why risk it?

Can Strava not do that? I use it regularly but just for recording runs so not entirely sure. The paid version is pretty comprehensive though!

300,000 yen a month! Part of that covering future demolition where you'll then have to find somewhere else to live. Doesn't seem too enticing!

Graphical abstract for "Regular Expressions for Corpus Queries" (Dykes & Tauber, 2026). Title: "Translating linguistic patterns into corpus queries."
A table demonstrates how a linguistic research question: "Which actions are explained in terms of someone's underlying reasons?", is translated into a CQL query.
Colour coding links linguistic patterns (red), query syntax (grey/bold), and corpus results (red italics).

The top row shows the linguistic pattern components: possessive, optional adjective or adverb, reason-word, linker, and verb.

The middle row shows the corresponding CQL query: [pos="POSS"] [pos="ADJ|ADV"]? "reason|rationale" "for|to" [pos="V"].

The bottom three rows show example corpus results: "my reason for asking," "her only rationale to go," and "their main reason to pivot."
