So with AI we managed to shift the focus from "how can we ensure our output creates most value, and if our output actually solves problems in the best possible way" securely back into "we must measure how much output we produce".
I get the praise for Excel. It's a remarkably useful software. But we don't talk enough about it being 2026, Excel still associates itself with the *.csv extension, even though it never manages to properly read CSV without any user intervention, which it doesn't offer on double-clicking such a file.
Agreeing with everything! And I also cross my fingers for the teased piece on (or yelling at) JPA, because it sounds like even more I would keep agreeing to 😁
It really should exist some hacker activist group or something which one could report online harassment to, and they would then track down the harasser and make their life miserable.
I thought I "got" product development, and it being the next evolution of iterative development/exploring/learning, always work on the right problem. Then I learned it can be simplified to agile development, and _include_ corporate interests, and suddenly it makes sense why all software become shit.
Going by divide as "separate", as in separately defined processes & tools dictates individuals and interactions instead of individuals deciding this themselves, I am taking a guess at current state-of-the-art peak enterprise software-based product development. The stuff you hear about from Gartner.
The reason you need to measure and collect feedback on the most trivial things, and be ready to improve the UI, is that even though you prominently display a button on your landing page, without need for scrolling, which says “Do X”, users will still complain they are not able to find where to do X.
Would be refreshing if instead of answering questions by _not_ actually answering, politicians instead said something in the line of “you are now touching on a dark and unfortunate consequence of our politics and values, so I am not comfortable to give an honest answer on this matter”.

The ideal with flat, “clean”, no texture, no illusion of depth, “Material Design” UIs emerged because of corporate need to be spend less money on building visuals. Not from any wish to build better and more intuitive UX for end-users.
If anything referring to existing or potential software appears in your OKR, you are probably not doing OKR, but instead upfront enumerating tasks you plan to do over the coarse of few next months. I.e. old-style planning you have probably acknowledged to be sub-effective since you attempt at OKR.
Your irregular reminder that, even in languages where nullability is not captured by the type system, using an empty String as the absence of a String is worse than using null.
So a colleague ordered some stuff, and discovered that the carrier was UPS. Instead of struggling with UPS failing their core business (a.k.a. delivering) she just immediately opted for the return fee for the store. Imagine delivering a service in such a manner people would pay to avoid it.
This really strikes a chord with me, because it is just yet another variant of the same pattern all over again. And it fascinates me how some gets really emotional when I propose that product teams may benefit with also having ops/platform experts as actual team members.
Sounds familiar? Not that many years ago, developers needed to be "shielded" from the business and their users and customers, because that world is so chaotic, and development is complicated, expensive, and time-consuming enough. We must optimize for developers to focus on their craft in isolation.
What I am curious about, and also open to being an issue, is that the tooling offered by the big cloud platform providers, is so bad, and so low level, that you need this extra layer of protection and "abstraction" from them before your runtime environment is exposed to devs on your product teams.
Years and years ago we had teams to make Web frameworks on top of Web frameworks. Eventually we figured out that it is harmful to base applications on badly designed in-house tech scaffolds.
Now we make platforms on top of platforms instead.
It is equally possible to use arguably “better” tooling that may be more aligned with modern and effective software/product dev practices, and still be task-oriented. The difference is in to what degree a tool “drives” status quo of obsolete practice. No tool is neutral in affecting human behavior.
The main problem with Jira is not that it is bad software, although it is enshittified beyond belief. The issue is focusing on tasks _in a development and innovation context_ and using tools that enforce and/or make it hard to leave this mindset, and Jira excels at this.
Awesome talk, thank you! I admittedly haven’t read the book, but on numerous occasions I have thought “Wait, what?” when being presented with arguments citing this book.
So many SoMe apps I wouldn’t care if were regulated into oblivion by consumer rights laws. But it also fascinates me how many people are genuinely surprised and outraged when the apps they use for free use dark UX patterns to try making their income source (typically ads) more effective.
Two 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless game controllers, only difference one is purple and another is black. Also shows that they identify themselves as exactly the same device in a device index on a computer, making it impossible to tell them apart.
I need to study this.
The smartass who came up with the brilliant idea to make localized versions of Visual Basic and spreadsheet formulas, is today working in the company who makes the search input field in emoji selectors 💀
