First step toward recognition of trans rights in healthcare
The Green Party welcomes this morning's High Court decision granting The Professional Association for Transgender Health Aotearoa's (PATHA) application to halt a ban on life-saving medication for trans youth, until a full review can be heard.
"Trans rights are human rights and our trans whanau deserve access to critical healthcare," says Takatapui and Rainbow Communities spokesperson, Kahurangi Carter.
"This is a step in the right direction in the fight for trans rights to be recognised and upheld, and it affirms the tireless work of those on the ground advocating for care, dignity, and evidence-based healthcare.
"We want to extend our thanks to all those across Aotearoa working relentlessly for our trans rangatahi and their whรฃnau.
"New Zealand now has an opportunity to lead with compassion and evidence. What's needed is a commitment to support our rainbow communities by delivering equitable, accessible healthcare based on science and empathy-not political posturing.
"The Greens affirm our pledge to properly resource and promote clear pathways for timely, free, non-discriminatory access to all forms of gender-affirming healthcare based on informed consent and self-determination.
"We will continue to fight until the rights of every young person with gender dysphoria or gender incongruence are fully recognised and entrenched," says Kahurangi Carter.

Hey #kawaiicon one more thing as we head back to work: if you're going to try taking your full lunch break or finishing on time and feel like you're already "failing" thatโ€™s okay.

Consistency isnโ€™t about being perfect; just show up and try your best each day.

In their ruling, released today, the NZMC also took issue with that, writing:

The parents are entitled to express their views about the tragic events and their views on the teenโ€™s gender identity and RNZ is entitled to report them. But their perspective came from a particular point of view and drove the narrative. The fact that the story was brought to RNZ by a group that is regarded as having an anti-trans perspective should have alerted RNZ to the fact that there was a wider agenda at play.

The NZMC concluded:

The Council believes RNZ should have been aware that there was a wider agenda at play and another side of the story that needed to be told, particularly when further information emerged after the publication of the first story. They could have provided a balancing alternative perspective in a number of ways, in the original story or subsequently.

The complaint is upheld for lack of balance and fairness.

as reported in webworm today, the nz media council has ruled against RNZ, saying it lacked balance and fairness in its reporting over the death of trans teen alex. hopefully this encourages RNZ to look at all their reporting on trans issues - they need to (www.webworm.co/trainhopping/)
