Eventually, my great-grandfather joined his father as a stoker at the mill. My grandad still recounts ghost stories they would tell about phantom footsteps in the long, dark corridors when they went in to work before sunrise.
Two of my favourite discoveries: my great-grandfather (eighteen at the time) with "Messenger Boy" as his recorded occupation and his father with "Firesman" as his.
I managed to find all my great-grandparents. Only two of them are recorded as Irish speakers and only one of those as a native speaker. I think another may have gone on to learn it in adulthood (as did my late grandfather who spoke it fluently).
Seeing my granny and grandad's names in the census, I'm reminded how moving archival records can be.
