I am remembering that I actually did not enjoy indie bookstore day last year because it was so hectic everywhere I could not relax and browse the way I like to so this year I'm going to buy some extra books some other time. Yay for bookstores being busy, of course!

They also inspire me! It's so energizing to see their curiosity and commitment.

(Quite a lot of the students had read Middlemarch with me in another seminar last year - hence the decision to do DD instead this time.)

Also, although I sometimes regretted not having assigned Middlemarch in this particular seminar, Daniel Deronda proved such a big success with the group that it was worth the trade-off. And they absolutely loved Silas Marner. Poor Felix Holt was the unambiguous loser of the bunch. 😏

Grading is rarely pleasurable but I have to say, the students in my George Eliot seminar have written such good and varied and authentic final essays that it really is nice working my way through them.

I'm so sorry.

And it means so much to students, to be seen, talked to, considered, challenged *as* individuals, as real people, by real people. That's not only how they learn, it's how they develop and change.

That makes sense (in terms of what's in the book). The interpolated bits seemed really lead-footed to me. I started skipping them to see how the romance was going, and the romance was too predictable and lacked any spark!

I'll see if I can at least rebook for less dreary times.

not stop actually educating experts because without that double check all we get is garbage? Truly baffling.

as long as you have a person double check it because of all of the errors and confusions and hallucinations. I do not understand how this is progress. Shouldn't we just hire them, the experts, while also not allowing bad AI to muck things up for non experts who don't know when it's wrong, and also

I was just listening to a financial advice podcast (😫) and the two guys, both very expert, were raving about AI - not how good it *actually* is at giving financial advice but how good they are sure it is going to get any day now and in the meantime it's great (they both said)

Looks like air Canada has just cancelled the direct Halifax Vancouver service I was booked on. Now I'm on a red eye and will get there a day later. Sigh.

Yes, it seems to me to be trying to be More Ambitious but it’s just dragging as a result.

The latest Emily Henry novel is way too long to be this dull - or way too dull to be this long. πŸ₯±

I'm probably most proud of having successfully installed the drapery hardware in my apartment - and its not having come crashing down yet! :-)

When I teach the novel I always start by talking about themes and variations as a way to organize the masses of information in our heads. Fog, housekeeping, parenting, legitimacy, infection - all good ways to think about how many ways different things and people in the novel are connected! So good.

(As of yesterday I have been officially divorced for one year and I have been "managing on my own" for just over two - which after 31 years of being married doesn't feel like that long, really.)

Today I took my car in to swap out the tires and get an alignment check and I know this is not a big deal but car care was my ex-husband's domain for so long that every time I successfully complete one of these tasks I feel like I level up in my ongoing game of "managing on my own".

and if I click on one, the algorithm them disappears it so I can never find it again. It's maddening. (Why do I still have an account? b/c there are still friends and family who *only* are online there. Is that enough? Maybe not any more.)

When I open FB my feed is just a non-stop stream of promotions and posts by people or accounts I don't follow and have never followed. I just don't understand the theory behind this. I (used to) go to FB to keep up with my friends and family. Half the time I can't even find their latest updates;
