Ronald Takaki's books contain an excellent history of migration and plurality in the US, though his classic "From Different Shores" ends in the 1980s: archive.org/details/from...

what a surprise, anthropic, who have long demonstrated delusional traits concerning their tech, "sent" their newest frontier LLM model to a shrink to report on its "good mental and emotional functioning." No need for peer review when you have paid-for fake "science"! arstechnica.com/ai/2026/04/w...
baked alaska... how could you top that?
cognitive surrender... a term for those zealous LLM users who are overconfident in the chatbot's answers, especially when they're wrong arstechnica.com/ai/2026/04/r...
...don't get me started on the "those who can't do, teach" trope 🤡
Just the newest chapter in decades of anti-expertise buffoonery; in my (public) high school kids got beat up semi-regularly if they got As, contributing to a low graduation rate and poor job prospects for those who endured. Living in the UK and Turkey I rarely saw this there.
Rosalia's Lux getting some rotation around here... and Raye's album that just dropped
golly gee, would have never guessed that a plagiarizing chatbot would turn out to be a plagiarizing chatbot! www.theguardian.com/books/2026/m...
March 26 at 5:30pm, for @cunygcmusic.bsky.social at the CUNY GC (@thegraduatecenter.bsky.social ), we're having this presentation/discussion of the ethics of generative AI in music studies research. Much of the discussion will be broadly applicable to humanistic social science research, too!
They're not using the new Flock pan-tilt cameras, are they? The totally unsecure ones?
... you'll be SHOCKED to know these THREE TRICKS for getting the most out of your GEMINI EXPERIENCE! Or something equally dire.
Happy St. Patrick's Day, New York.
We're starting to get students who can't name a single musician at all—their whole frame of reference comes from listening to spotify's "lo-fi chill beats to study to". Some have also never seen a musical instrument played in person, and struggle to recognize what a guitar or violin is. Tough times!

I never could move past his early EFF years where he was the most rabid evangelist for eliminating all copyright/IP and became the biggest stooge for high tech firms in that capacity. His particular hatred of conventional authors and musicians was palpable. And only *now* we have enshittification?
it's not long, it was just prompted that way! 🤡
zohran just declared the winner here, called by AP!
Holy batman, that's epic! Congrats Mar, you deserved it!
I'm thankful every day I'm no longer dependent on album sales for the bulk of my "living," but real bummed how hard it's become with all the spoofing, impersonation, AI slop, and shit platform hijinks that currently define the streaming and digital distribution space. www.youtube.com/watch?v=plle...
I've been calling it shittipy gippity recently, which would make the user forms shittiper or gippiter, or something like that?
it hasn't helped that there were a few hasty "stories" by so-called "psychiatrists" (unvetted, of course) that "suggested" that shittipy gippity was no worse than talking with a talk therapist... at some sort of unspecified task, of course.
Our newest book, Gear: Cultures of Audio and Music Technologies, was just reviewed in Tape Op! tapeop.com/reviews/gear...
web.archive.org/web/20250613... is probably the best we can get right now. Some of the IU websites being down appears to be unrelated to the program cuts.
In addition to many other important programs, IU Bloomington is eliminating its Folklore and Ethnomusicology Department, one of the most storied and successful in the country.
users of academia.edu, there's a new scheme of AI generated spam emails asking for your whatsapp number. This one began with "Please allow me to introduce myself briefly. My name is Simmons. I am from Bologna, Italy. I currently live in the United States and work as a systems biology researcher..."
a chainsaw-wielding memcoin-pimping grifter meddling in the midterms? what could go wrong? 🤡
Ok people were asking "What IS a small farm anyway?"
so let's talk farm size, how it's measured in the US, and what that can tell us about how agriculture really works.
wot, so has Gitlab partnered with that blasted, narcissistic, snarky language app owl now?
