We're thrilled to share a big news of Li Lab's proud alum (#74 PhD Dr. Lauren Fields @chemistlauren.bsky.social) for receiving the highly prestigious Schmidt Science Fellowship to develop earlier diagnostic tools for ALS during her postdoctoral career 💫 🎉 Very well-deserved, Lauren!

So excited to announce that I’m officially Dr. Lauren Fields!!!! Thank you so much to everyone for all of their support over the years. I cannot wait to see what the future holds! 🍾
It was great to share all of the research that was able to be accomplished under the 2024 Analytical Graduate Fellowship during my visit to @elilillyandcompany.bsky.social last week! It was great to meet so many people and see some exciting science.
RFK Jr. has now officially stated that he will dismantle the United States Preventive ServicesTask Force (USPSTF).
This is an independent body of expert scientists who volunteer their time to review data and provide guidance to Americans on important things like cancer screenings.
Sending my best to a true public servant and fellow Midwesterner, Governor Tony Evers, on his announced retirement. I saw up close his commitment to doing the right thing for Wisconsinites - and countless lives are better today because he stepped up to serve.
Thank you to Mexico 🇲🇽 for stepping up and helping in Texas!
Happy Pride Mexico, thank you! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ How amazing! 🫶
Hey American republicans, it’s June, so “Happy I’m a pissy little bitch month” and kindly fck all the way off

"Institutions must support transgender and gender nonconforming and other marginalized scientists by securing their safety and privacy; their access to legal aid and health care; and their opportunities in education, employment, and society," argues a new #LetterToScience. scim.ag/4kQCMtr
Kill the brutal bill.
Before it kills us.
Mahmoud Khalil is finally home with his beautiful wife and newborn son.
Each one of the 104 days he spent detained was a grave injustice.
From the moment of his detention, @ccrjustice.org + @aclu.org engaged my office as we worked closely to help secure his release. They did remarkable work here.
Check out our latest review on @rsc.org Chem Bio, featuring quantitative MS-based strategies for neuropeptide analysis and highlights their applications on revealing neuropeptide roles in biological systems 🤓 Congrats to Angel, Wenxin and Haoran 🥳

All NIH and NSF grants for my entire team--and for all of Harvard, I guess?--have been terminated.
As provocative as that sounds, the practical effect is probably not much. Everything was already frozen. 🤷♂️
On the upside, it makes tracking terminated grants easier. No more guesswork at Harvard!
My ongoing request:
If your NSF or NIH grant was terminated--whether at Harvard or elsewhere--please report it here.
NSF: grant-watch.us/submit-nsf.h...
NIH: grant-watch.us/submit-nih.h...
Our trackers are actively used in lawsuits and are often the only record that terminations ever occurred.
Senator Alsobrooks: You’ve been unable to address specific questions about your agency. Can you name which office the Safe to Sleep program operates out of?
RFK Jr.: Guesses wrong 5 times
Alsobrooks: It is the Eunice Kennedy Shriver NICHD.
This is intentional. Because higher costs (especially coupled with attacks on DEI) will mean fewer and disproportionately more privileged students going to college. Which curbs the power of universities. And which keeps anyone who isn't highly privileged from using college to grow their own power.
Huge congrats to UWMadison #ClassOf2025 🎉🎉🎉 We're so proud to watch our amazing lab members walk the stage. Cheers to Drs. @chemistlauren.bsky.social, @hnmiles.bsky.social, Zexin Zhu, Malik Ebbini, Olga Riusech, and Zicong Wang for your hard work, big dreams, and bright futures ahead! 🍻🍻🎓🎓🍾🍾
"the WWE lady who is supposed to be ending the education department is revoking Harvard's research grants": 2025 in a nutshell
The current administration’s narrative that Harvard (and all universities) feel “entitled” to federal dollars misleads the public. Nor are these funds a “privilege” 1/n
I’m at NIGMS and my F31-diversity was terminated about 2 weeks ago. I’m still in disbelief.
"WE'VE ARRANGED A society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. Who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it?" "Science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking. A way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along."
I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.
This is about all of us. Never forget that.
NSF just revised its indirect cost policy—15%.
When NIH tried the same, it led to lawsuits, layoffs, and a federal court injunction.
Changes like this can wreak havoc on research.
MORE ACTION ITEMS TO COME SOON. Stay tuned.

I’m both grateful and mad that this awesome woman paused her metastatic breast cancer fight to fly to DC and lobby for research funding. Janet Ramsey has had her life prolonged by clinical trials and is pushing our representatives to keep investing in life saving discoveries.
