April 19th, 2011:

Morning 500 mb analyses from my top 4 chase days:
6/16/14, Pilger, NE
5/24/16, Dodge City, KS
6/16/25, Wellfleet, NE
5/28/13, Bennington, KS, 1.0
These patterns all support slow moving storms along mesoscale boundaries under modest 500 mb flow. Big negatively tilted troughs are overrated.
Radar loop of the tornado-warned line of storms last night. A mesovortex developed within the line west of Champaign-Urbana, prompting the tornado warning. This vortex dissipated as it approached town, while a weaker circulation developed to its north, tracking near campus.
Analysis by Matthew Cappucci: I’ve chased a lot of tornadoes in my day. I’ve intercepted 60, lost nine windshields to giant hail and driven close to 100,000 miles.
Here’s a breakdown of some of the most impressive and memorable tornadoes I’ve seen:

The ultrawide view of a developing tornado shows its foundations in the entire supercell. That's way more fun than zooming in on ground swirls, no?

Photos of Wednesday's spectacular supercell in western Pennsylvania, a storm straight from the plains. One of the most amazing things I've ever seen, easily the most impressive supercell I've captured outside of Tornado Alley. I'll be thinking about this for a long time

It's spring in the Midwest. Fortunately, the circulation weakened as it approached Champaign-Urbana.
I live in the same area. Fortunately, the circulation weakened as it approached Champaign-Urbana. The line of storms was forecast to weaken near I-57
