Our paper discovering novel roles for the retrovirus-like proteins RTL8 and PEG10 in shaping stress granule biology is now online on Science Advances! #llps #stressgranules

Thank you, Chelsey!
Thank you and no worries, Mara!
Earlier this month, I defended my PhD in front of friends and family. As a teenager, I dreamed of this moment and I’m glad it finally came true. Thanks to my mentors, Drs. Paulson and Sharkey and my committee members! I will be starting a postdoctoral position in Dr. Roy Parker’s lab at CU Boulder.
Title: SOME GRAMMATICAL VOICES FOR USE IN SCIENTIFIC WRITING ACTIVE VOICE e.g. Our team collected samples and then we tested them. CLICKBAIT VOICE e.g. We collected some samples... You won't believe what happened next! PASSIVE VOICE e.g. Samples were collected and tested. HAIKU VOICE e.g. Quiet science lab. Workers arrive with samples. The testing begins. PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE VOICE e.g. We did all the collecting and testing. No need to thank us. Just doing our job. CONSPIRACY VOICE e.g. Mysterious "Samples" were harvested and covertly "tested" by so-called scientists.

Wow, really stunning pictures!
Excited to share Benson’s and Maria’s work in collab w/Kostas Tzelepis: we found the nucleolar protein NPM1 is a marker of AML and can be targeted therapeutically

Really cool finding about how VCP protects against bacterial pathogens…
So excited to share our new paper out today in @nature.com. We repurposed R2 retrotransposons to create STITCHR, a tool that can make virtually any kind of edit in mammalian genomes including the scarless multi-kilobase scale insertions 🧵

Contrary to popular belief, what is important in science is as much its spirit as its product: it is as much the openmindedness, the primacy of criticism, the submission to the unforeseen, however upsetting, as the result, however new that may be. – Francois Jacob

Now we’re able to edit proteins directly! Really cool stuff!

March 21, 2-3 pm ET: What to do when your federal grant has been stopped or terminated
If you have a federal grant, I *highly* recommend going to this Friday's webinar on responding to grant terminations.
Lisa Brown, former general counsel at Dept of Ed, will present along with other lawyers.

Drosophila follicle showing retrotransposons (pink & yellow) expressed in somatic cells infecting the oocyte
1/ Transposable elements are often called "jumping genes" because they mobilize within genomes. 🧬
But did you know they can also jump 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 cells? 🤯
Our new study reveals how retrotransposons invade the germline directly from somatic cells.

This is so cool. Do you think it would work to segment and quantify 3D STED images?
Helpful table to determine how much your University or health system is set to lose if the NIH indirect cap is suddenly lowered to 15%. For SJSU it is $374k which is on the smaller end but devastating considering our other budget issues. datawrapper.dwcdn.net/l0ZqA/8/
