The computer is off and no more work to be done until January. Happy Christmas all, from turkeys past.

I watched The Mirror and the Light earlier, followed by Wham! Last Christmas Unwrapped, which I think helped.

Scientific research needs robust government backing, not Treasury penny-pinching | Andre Geim and Nancy Rothwell Research and development is an investment, not a cost, and if the UK is to maintain its world-leading position it must commit to long-term funding, say academics Andre Geim and Nancy Rothwell

It’s too late to affect the SR now (and my own instinct is that R&D will get a reasonable settlement given the focus on growth) but this is a nice short piece which makes the evergreen case for investment in research www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Out of the oven now, and will spend the rest of the day gradually cooling, occasionally stirring, with the whiskey added once cool.

The ingredients of Emma’s whiskey mincemeat melded together before going into a low oven for three hours: chopped apple, raisins, currants, sultanas, orange and lemon peel, vegetable suet, sugar and spices.

Snow on the ground, and the first batch of this year’s whiskey mincemeat is spending the morning in the oven.
