We are delighted that #BigGive will match donations for a proposed new VWT citizen science survey — Marten Month Pine Marten Survey — to help us learn more about where pine martens are in Britain and how people feel about them so we can focus work where it’s needed most. bit.ly/4sRNNht #MammalWeek

a chart showing rising emissions partic for high demand growth
"under the existing laws, our analysis shows that the expected growth in data centers would lead to $118 billion in climate damages and $1.6 billion in health damages by 2050 due to air pollution and emissions from fossil fuel power plants in Michigan"

all these universities kept axing medieval history departments as if they thought tyrants beefing with the Pope was going to stop being relevant
They’re incentivised to get a diagnosis that materially improves their lives and addresses their distress? How awful.
An outstretched hand holds a newspaper against a painted wall. The wall has been decorated with images from nature, clovers, mushroom and bee can be seen. The full page of the newspaper has an ad for Nature = Future, a campaign by the National Trust. The NT logo is on the top left side and the image is a woman, Director-General, Hilary McGrady, looking up to the light that streams through a lush green valley
We need to have a real conversation about nature.
Nature is fundamental to our wellbeing, our prosperity and our long-term future.
When we restore, protect and invest in nature, we can lower everyday bills, create healthier communities and ensure a better quality of life for everyone.
Wind & solar are currently producing 65% of Britain's electricity. Meanwhile, renewables now offer 30,000 more UK jobs than oil and gas. Meanwhile, we're in a climate emergency. Meanwhile, we're in a fossil fuel supply crisis. Meanwhile, the Tories and Reform want to scrap Net Zero. grid.iamkate.com

Our new research for @nationaltrust.org.uk
finds that after the NHS it’s Britain’s countryside and nature and historic buildings and architecture that are their biggest sources of pride in the UK.
And yet, as someone who is 5'11, I also struggle to find tops that are long enough in the arm or dont show my belly if I raise my arms.
It's incredible how they manage not to really fit anyone at all.
Fantastic news in the UK today - the government has apparently ditched its plan to force creatives to 'opt out' if they don't want AI companies training on their life's work.

Just to reiterate that bombing heritage sites is a war crime.
Awful news about Glasgow Central, I'm still hoping the station itself escaped serious damage.
But while we're here, can anyone spot the problem with the news photo below, from thetraveler.org/glasgow-cent...?
We've really got to STOP using AI to fake things.
The House of Lords Digital & Communications Committee just published their report on AI, copyright & the creative industries, and their conclusions could not be clearer.

FT comments section this morning - saying what everyone else is thinking, right?
Gas prices jumped again this morning and are on track to double - a stark reminder of our exposure to fossil fuel volatility.
The real solution isn’t more drilling, but moving away from combustion: electrify, use renewable power, and boost energy efficiency.
🔴 Nigel Farage’s Long History of Crying ‘Fraud’ Whenever His Party Loses Elections
The Reform UK leader has a long record of blaming his own party’s election defeats on “cheating” by ethnic minorities, yet no evidence of it can ever be found.

Genuine racism is a problem in British politics, but a lot of where we are is because of something else: UK politicians, journalists, poli-sci types have no mental map for the fact that the "electoral discontent around immigration" has no real connection to the level of immigration. 1/4
Ofgem, the UK energy regulator, has disclosed that 140 data centres want grid connections, requiring **50GW** of power capacity at peak
Britain’s peak demand on a recently was 45GW
Can this amount of energy be provided cleanly? Even if it can, is it worth it?

Yikes. We could just not? That is an option available to us. As a civilisation.

My childhood home in the 90s was without central heating until my mum had it installed. It was off the gas grid, so we had to get an oil system. I suspect quite a few homes in that village would have been in the same situation.
The plague of Bath Corgis.
I just found a useful public information booklet. Presumably made by the government in the 10 year olds room.
This report makes it crystal clear that every time a minister (wrongly) complains about newts or bats holding up development what they’re really doing is undermining our security. www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jan/20/...
The IUCN has been quietly behind many of the conservation success stories of the last 77 years — US withdrawal is a worrying sign both of that country’s increasing insularity, and its disregard of the natural world
Read this if you want to feel really good about the bravery and decency of regular Americans

🤷🏻♂️
This year has been brutal for the #climate movement.
Rollbacks, repression, & outright denial, especially in the US, have made progress feel fragile & uneven.
Which is exactly why it matters to pause & look back at what did move forward in 2025.
Here are 12 real wins 🏆, one for each month 🧵⬇️
Though of course actual public benefit here from dodgy LLMs trained on stolen content and loosed into the public with few safety rails highly questionable in the first place.
They’re gonna do to Chat GPT what they did to google search and bury the content that seem useful to people (regardless of its actual accuracy) under ad content. The familiar cycle of “oh cool we built something that might have broad public benefit. Now let’s undermine it so we can monetise it”.
