With falling flights and falling profits, what is the use of additional runway capacity at Gatwick?
It will end up like Manchester, with massive investment in infrastructure resulting in dormant capacity. Manchester's second runway, completed in 2001, has never been fully used.

Gatwick Airport's t profits and passenger numbers are down from 2024, due to a drop in short-haul passengers. The conflict in the Middle East will likely make that fall further.
This proves what we’ve said all along: Gatwick's Big Enough.

I just supported this case!
We’re half way through the hearing into our legal challenge on Gatwick Airport expansion – and the govt has made a partial concession on one of our grounds: noise. We’re pleased we have secured better protection for local people on this at least.
The case continues.

Thank you Carla for your support!
Day 2 of the hearing into our legal challenge to Gatwick Airport expansion.
Florence Long of @theaef.bsky.social said: "AEF stands with local campaigners who are challenging the Government's prioritisation of unchecked growth over the UK's climate commitments and public health."
UK airspace reform could sideline public input: Charles Lloyd of AEF's Airspace & Noise Community Forum said “Local residents are just beginning to wake up to the realisation that they will have almost no meaningful voice at every stage in the .. process” 1/3

I think it will only be a short scene whole film is four minutes. A line of people outside The Royal Court of Justice. One is holding a Friends of the Earth banner. Three have banners reading 'Gatwick's Big Enough'.
The first day of the hearing into legal challenges on Gatwick expansion, today was mostly about climate impacts.
Thanks to those who came to support, including @carladenyer.bsky.social, Paul Steedman of @cpresussex.bsky.social, and reps from @friends-earth.bsky.social and @greenpeaceuk.bsky.social
Good morning! The hearing into two two legal challenges on Gatwick – Peter Barclay's and CAGNE's – starts today.
Peter Barclay argues consent for expansion was unlawful as the govt failed to follow its own aviation policy and failed to assess climate impacts.

Did you know that around 60-70% of flights we Brits take are for holidays (as opposed to business or for visiting family members)? This is good news, as these are the flights we can most easily swap for slower travel - and make the journey a part of the holiday itself.
Another local group, Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions (CAGNE), is bringing a separate judicial review and the two cases will be heard together.
We'll be in the High Court from 20 January.
Our chair·Peter Barclay is challenging the govt's decision to allow Gatwick Airport to convert its emergency runway into full-time use.
The climate impact of this expansion is AT LEAST 8 x bigger than the Airport claims

Another ridiculous move by the government granting Luton airport expansion, continuing to fly in the face of climate commitments.
We stand in solidarity with Luton campaigners working to stop this expansion.
A group of people in high vis holding airplane landing signals with a no planes icon and a world in flames icon, standing in front of the Royal Courts of Justice in London. Two people are holding a yellow banner in front which says 'say no to bigger airports'.

Outside the Royal Courts of Justice today calling out the govts foolish Jet Zero strategy.
Supposed green solutions don't exist & we need to reduce our emissions to prevent the worst impacts of climate breakdown - the govt must rewrite the strategy & stop growth in aviation.
Graphic which reads: Stop Airport Expansion. Help us tell the government we don't want expansion at any UK airport, including Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton. Sign the petition. To the left of the image is a child holding a handmade placard which reads 'Stop Airport Expansion'
Can you help us tell the government not to expand airports?
The Climate Change Committee is clear: there should be no net airport expansion if we are to meet our legally-binding climate targets. UK airports are big enough. Stop Airport Expansion.

GALBA is taking the government's aviation policy to court. Join us outside the courts for day one of their 'Jet Zero' Judicial Review.
More than 20 airports across the UK have plans to expand. More flights mean more emissions, when we should be doing everything we can to reduce our emissions.

In light of @theCCCuk’s new budget, Mike Childs says: “Technological investment is crucial but relying on solutions that are not workable at scale to justify a third runway at Heathrow, or expansion at Gatwick, would be a foolish and reckless gamble.”
www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-...
People with banners protesting against proposed airport expansions. They read #NoNewRunways - There is another way, Gatwick - Neighbour from Hell and Heathrow expansion will destroy thousands of homes
And now the transport minister is "minded to approve" a second runway at Gatwick.
The Planning Inspectorate recommended REFUSAL of this in November for various reasons including that the greenhouse gas emissions will affect our ability to meet carbon targets.

3. Equally concerning is the government’s failure to listen to the evidence of the significant negative impact on local communities in terms of noise, air pollution, overloading of infrastructure and a general worsening of people's lives.
