🥶With streams freezing around #Davos I am really wondering how my #watertemperature sensors are holding up in #Dischma this winter!
Fingers crossed I still get some meaningful measurements this spring🤞

Our Perspective by Amber van Hamel and colleagues @cchartierrescan.bsky.social @mariagrundmann.bsky.social @manuelaibrunner.bsky.social emphasizes that climate change will worsen riverine heatwaves, demanding better data and models to address them.

Extreme #temperatures in #mountain streams and rivers harm people, #nature and the economy. #SLF scientist Maria Grundmann is researching how they occur. Her findings should help to develop countermeasures.

Biodiversity loss and wildlife declines can seem abstract and difficult to contextualise for general audiences. Studies like this can help bring a more relatable perspective to such issues. 🧪🌍

Join our new #EGU26 session on “Freshwater Temperatures: From Local to Global Scales” from 3 to 8 May 2026, on-site in Vienna and virtually!
We ( @manuelaibrunner.bsky.social , Michelle van Vliet, Felipe Saavedra, James White, and myself) invite abstract submissions to our session HS2.3.3!
Are you working with #watertemperatures in freshwater systems?
Are you doing field work, modelling, large-scale analyses, or catchment studies?
Are you studying natural and anthropogenic processes governing fresh water temperatures, and their implications on ecosystems and water resources?

HYCLIMM at IMC 2025!
Last week, HYCLIMM members @mariagrundmann.bsky.social, Joren Janzing, and Raul Wood attended the International Mountain Conference in Innsbruck.
Stay tuned for upcoming papers!

Just Launched 📢 The WMO’s 2024 State of Global Water Resources Report is now available!
In 2024, the water cycle has become increasingly erratic and extreme, swinging between deluge and drought.
This is the #StateOfWater.

📈 Yesterday I presented my first results of my #fieldstudy in #Dischma investigating variability of #watertemperature in an Alpine catchment at #IMC2025!
🏔️How far downstream can we still see the cooling effects of meltwater from snow and ice?

Congrats to Isabella Anglin at #IMC25 @imc2025.bsky.social talking about her fantastic work on testing new methods to understand sublimation processes over snowpack!
Learning, connecting, and exploring hydrology in action! 🌊 @mariagrundmann.bsky.social & @cchartierrescan.bsky.social took part in the 16th Catchment Science Summer School at the University of Birmingham and came back with a lot of new insights and inspiration! ✨

🌦️I swear it is not always raining when I go out in the field, its just the only times I post about it! (We got soaked)
☔Here we were in the #plymlimon catchment in #wales, studying water pathways, surface and subsurface flow and learned a lot about measuring techniques (and pitfalls!).

It was really cool getting some advice on my ongoing field study in #Dischmá last week! Planning this field campaign to study #riverwatertemperature is one of the biggest challenges in my PhD so far and I am glad I get some experienced guidance and some new ideas to explore after our discussions!
Extrem schade, ich war sehr gerne dort!
👋 Hi, we are HYCLIMM – Hydrology & Climate Impacts in Mountain Regions – a research group at @slfdavos.bsky.social & @ethz.ch . We study #water & #climateextremes in mountains under #globalchange!
↪️ We’ll share updates on our work & team led by @manuelaibrunner.bsky.social
Back from holiday, I finally have time to show you this: I am so happy I got the chance by @hs.egu.eu to talk about how a #watertemperature community would benefit research. As a young scientist, I am looking forward to becoming part of a group!

How frequent do extreme river water temperatures occur? We will find out in the #riheat project @slfdavos.bsky.social with @cchartierrescan.bsky.social and @manuelaibrunner.bsky.social
Rising river water temperatures impact the usability of river water for cooling industry.

How often these extreme events occur and how bad can they get, these are the questions that we are adressing within the RiHeat project at @slfdavos.bsky.social.
