Nature Magazine Editorial: Although led by NASA, Artemis II wasn’t just a US achievement; the mission was a collaborative effort. Long may such cooperation continue.

« For many people back home on Earth, the mission was a brief reminder of the sheer scale of outer space, and a prompt to contemplate both our power and our powerlessness. It turned all of us into children at camp, lying supine and looking up at the stars, thinking very big thoughts. »

“The names of the rivers also reflect Canada’s diversity and heritage. Future rovers from our fleet could continue this trend by taking names of other Canadian natural wonders.”
“Canada’s rivers and streams have been the routes of the continent for millennia and continue to be pathways of discovery, transport, and exchange,” said the agency when voting was first announced.
Athabasca was one of four final names for Canada’s Lunar Rover Mission, and was selected for the historical and cultural importance the waterway carries.

Reid Wiseman on #Artemis II: "We have Earth out window 4 and Moon out window 3... the Moon is about 3-4 times the size of the Earth and it is almost full, and the Earth is just a small crescent out there... it's magnificent... such a majestic view out here"
Mission Control: "Amaze, amaze, amaze!"
(April 6, 2026) In this fully illuminated view of the Moon, the near side (the hemisphere we see from Earth), is visible on the right. It is identifiable by the dark splotches that cover its surface. These are ancient lava flows from a time early in the Moon’s history when it was volcanically active. The large crater west of the lava flows is Orientale basin, a nearly 600-mile-wide crater that straddles the Moon’s near and far sides. Orientale's left half is not visible from Earth, but in this image we have a full view of the crater. Everything to the left of the crater is the far side, the hemisphere we don’t get to see from Earth because the Moon rotates on its axis at the same rate that it orbits round us. Image Credit: NASA
👨🚀 The #Artemis II crew are now further from home than any humans ever, and European engines brought them there 🚀.
🌍 The record of 400 171 km was previously held by the Apollo 13 mission 🌕.
NASA is 0.35% of the federal budget.
In the ENTIRE HISTORY of NASA it has cost about the same as just the last 2 years of the DoD budget
Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is a mission specialist, meaning he has trained for all roles to jump into action wherever needed, like Koch. Artemis II is his first spaceflight, and he is the first Canadian to fly to the Moon.

🧵 NASA was just showing some of their visualizations that they are using to help with situational awareness on the Orion Spacecraft. The first shows where "Integrity" is and how much is left to go on the flight path. Below, it shows Earth's DSN stations & if they are in the day or at night.

A good sign: Artemis 2 astronauts now in quarantine
Late on Friday, January 23, NASA announced that the Artemis 2 crew had started their "health stabilization program," otherwise known as quarantine, a good sign that the mission was on track for an evening launch on Friday, Feb. 6.
