Expectations then vs views now: Just before he took office, a sizable four in 10 felt Trump's policies as president would make them financially better off. Asked about what's happening today, just a quarter of Americans say those policies are.

Americans want Trump's focus more on prices, not tariffs; most approve of deportation efforts — CBS News poll Most Americans say the matter of Trump administration officials discussing U.S. military plans on the Signal app is serious.

After a week that brought tough economic news and polling showing views of economy still sour, most say President Trump's focus is too much on tariffs — which they believe will end up raising prices — and not enough on lowering prices.

With most describing him as "tough," "energetic," "focused" and "effective" — and as doing what he'd promised during his campaign — President Trump has started his term with net positive marks from Americans overall in our latest CBS News polling. www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-a...

Pardons for J6 are mostly supported by Trump’s voters today, though not by the public overall.
For context, Rep/Trump backers’ disapproval of the events on J6 has softened in polling over time in the years since.

Biden, meanwhile, exits with Americans evaluating his presidency in retrospect as low as they ever have during his term.

There's also some sense among Dems of missed opportunity as Biden departs: just over half of Dems think Harris could have won if Biden had stepped aside sooner.

Many Democrats describe themselves as "demoralized," along with being "exhausted" and "concerned" about U.S. politics when asked to choose descriptors. Few say they're even "interested," even fewer say they're "motivated."

People are not sold on the idea of buying Greenland. Most Trump voters would approve of it, but not universally, and it's not a popular idea beyond that.

It does shed an important light on how Americans think Trump thinks, though: a lot of them feel he's just leveraging for a larger negotiation.

On a number of other potential policy ideas, things are more split. Ending birthright citizenship is not widely popular, and it only divides Trump voters.

Most Americans are in favor of deportations of immigrants who are in the country illegally, as voters were during the campaign, though not of using the military to carry that out.

In all, more Americans are pulling for the new administration to succeed compared to very few for it to fail. The ratio is far higher for desired success. This is similar to how it was for Joe Biden four years ago, too. And then for many, they say it simply depends on what Trump tries to do.

That's bolstered by their expectations for a good economy in 2025 - higher than they currently rate it - along with wide belief among his voters that Trump will bring down grocery prices, make them financially better off.

Our new polling ahead of the inaugural. A majority are optimistic about the next four years with Donald Trump, even more so than they were in 2017 before his first term.

In this hyper-partisan era, though, optimism for incoming presidents isn't quite as high as it once was.

...about half consider the drones a threat to the U.S. - particularly so among those who think the drones are being controlled by a foreign country or government.

So we polled about the drones... plenty of uncertainty about who's controlling them... but the public widely suspects the U.S. government is keeping info from them...

Most - including a big majority of Dems - think tariffs would cause prices to go higher -

but fewer Republicans and fewer Trump voters agree -

(For the third who think tariffs will raise prices but support them anyhow, this is presumably a cost they're willing to bear.)

So here's our polling on tariffs from this weekend -

...the idea of tariffs gets mixed support overall, but wide support from Donald Trump's voters in particular...

Now, there are plenty of folks who'll gather mainly with people who (they think) voted the same as they did - but...

Folks are a little more likely to say they'll avoid political talk when they think they'll be with a mix of different voters at dinner...

(Maybe related to that!) People's top answer to what they're especially thankful for - family and friends.

Hi everyone!
I'll get started here with a look at what Americans are most thankful for - and if they'll talk politics at Thanksgiving...
(Answer: nope, most will try to avoid it!)
