Wetlands do a lot of work. They provide cover for young fish, habitat for wildlife, and help trap sediment and slow runoff. Grass Carp can put that at risk by eating aquatic plants and uprooting plant beds.

Grass Carp can release hundreds of thousands of drifting eggs in flowing rivers. They spread through flooding, boat movement, and accidental release, and can damage wetlands by removing aquatic plants.

Not all invasive carps cause the same problem.

Bighead Carp can reduce food available to native fish by filtering plankton, Silver Carp can become a jumping hazard for boaters, Grass Carp can remove aquatic plants and damage wetlands, and Black Carp can threaten mussels and snails.

DFO uses tools like electrofishing, nets, larval light traps, bongo nets, and eDNA to monitor priority waters for invasive carp. Different methods help detect different fish sizes and life stages.

That β€œminnow” in your bait bucket might not be just a minnow. Some baitfish can look like young Grass Carp at a glance. Never dump bait or bait bucket water into a lake or river.

Where they hide matters. Different invasive carp species use different habitats, from weedy shallows and backwaters to main rivers and riverbed zones. If you suspect one, take clear photos, note the location, and report it.

Clean. Drain. Dry. Every time you leave the water. Remove plants/debris, drain all water-holding compartments, and dry gear before launching elsewhere.

Acoustic deterrents use underwater sound to steer fish. Because carp have swim bladders, targeted frequencies may help block their movement in narrow waterways. Learn more: www.invasivecarp.ca/surveillance...

Silver Carp vs Bighead Carp. Silver Carp are usually clean, uniform silver and have a long, sharp belly keel that runs forward toward the throat. They can also leap from the water when startled by boat motors. Learn more at: invasivecarp.ca

Black Carp love mollusks! Using pharyngeal (throat) teeth to crush shells. One fish could consume up to 20,000 lbs in its lifetime. Ontario has 41 freshwater mussel species (16 at risk), filtering ~40 L/day. Black Carp threaten mussels & snails if they reach the Great Lakes. #invasivecarp #fishing

On the 11th day of #Carpmas, Grass Carp ate 40% of their bodyweight in aquatic vegetation!

By eating such huge quantities of plants, they can significantly alter the composition of habitat by reducing food sources, shelter and spawning areas for native fish.

On the 6th day of #Carpmas, Black Carp reduced essential biodiversity in the Great Lakes!

Black Carp would compete for food and have negative impacts on native populations of fishes, turtles, birds, raccoons, otters and muskrats.

On the 5th day of #Carpmas, Silver Carp interrupted recreational activities!

Silver Carp can jump up to 3m out of the water when startled by boat noise, which can cause injuries while out on the water.

On the 4th day of #Carpmas, Bighead Carp outcompeted and caused decreased population sizes of native planktivores. species such as Alewife, Bloater, Cisco and Rainbow Smelt.
This will impact predatory fishes which consume those species: Yellow Perch, Lake Trout, Walleye, Large and Smallmouth Bass.

#Carpmas! Grass Carp can eat ~40% of their body weight in aquatic plants each day and only digest about half. As few as 10 fish per hectare may cut wetland vegetation by ~50%, stirring up sediment and making water murkier in the process.

Common and mirror carp were introduced to Canada in the late 1800s, are now well-established across many waters, and are still considered non-native/invasive here. Now we’re working hard to prevent more invasive carps (Grass, Bighead, Silver, Black) from becoming established in the Great Lakes.
