“The simple reading is that the authors have shown that kids who get referred to a psychiatrist go to more psychiatric appointments than kids who are not referred.”
Realizing that some of my inexplicable sadness about the Artemis II stuff is that it feels like a trans-dimensional communication from an America that took a different path and chose joy instead of fear and hate.
🧵 Democracy feels like it's in a rough state at the moment across the globe, and we hear various explanations, like polarisation, extremism, disinformation, and loss of trust. But what if those explanations are mainly symptoms and we've been trying to treat them rather than the underlying causes?
Really interesting study that found AI use is concentrated in opinion articles (rather than straight news) at top newspapers

Might be the greatest opening paragraph of anything ever.
Did somebody say trip-hop?
A lot of people clap and cheer at Arkell v Pressdram style legal letters.
But the most deadly legal letters are calm and polite, and this one is lethal.
Everything we need to do to stop climate breakdown, we also need to do for national security. Energy saving, more renewables, more electricity storage and interconnectors, electrification of transport, heating, cooking and industrial processes, plant-based diets. We win on all fronts.
It is the anniversary of the My Lai massacre today. I'd say that even more than most years, it's important to remember what happened.
And the role Hugh Thompson, an active serviceman, played in both stopping and publicising it. Despite enormous military, political and public pressure to stay quiet.
I could not be more stoked to announce CONTINUE, a defiant, new games magazine that aims to celebrate and interrogate the culture, creativity and community of videogames. The Kickstarter is now live below. www.kickstarter.com/projects/con...
So stoked for @frogsandstars.bsky.social who just won the Long Covid Awareness media award at the Emerge Australia Awards for Excellence in Journalism. She has been doing such incredible, sustained reporting on Long Covid, and this is well-deserved recogntion. emerge.org.au/the-emerge-a...
Threading some stuff about oil & oil markets, just basic but hope it helps:
1/ oil markets are what you call “finely balanced”. Supply is usually very very close to demand/consumption. Demand is hard to shift *quickly* in response to supply hiccups.
So even small supply changes = big price effects

Public service announcement: this is a FOSSIL FUEL CRISIS
Not an 'energy crisis'. People need energy: it keeps them alive. This is a crisis due to forced dependency on the most unreliable and unstable fuel product in human history.
THIS IS A FOSSIL FUEL CRISIS.
Screenshot of an X post by Senator Tom Cotton saying Iran has been an imminent threat to the United States for 47 years and that the president was right to act. Below is a Fox News segment with Cotton speaking while footage labeled “U.S. Central Command – Unclassified” shows a strike.
“Imminent.” You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
I just did the dumbest thing of my entire career to prove a much more serious point.
I tricked ChatGPT and Google, and made them tell other users I’m a competitive hot-dog-eating world champion
People are using this trick on a massive scale to make AI tell you lies. I’ll explain how I did it
Happy Women in science day. On this day I am thinking of all my women science mentors and Rita Levi-Montalcini who did experiments in her bedroom in defiance of Mussolini’s ban on Jews in academic and professional careers while WWII raged around her.
Over on threads someone just use ai;dr and we all need to adopt that right quick
I hate that podcasts are video now. They should be for funny and interesting little freaks who don’t have to be hot and dressed well
Good investigative work from ABC journos, but a gutless 'both-sides' headline and lead para.
The preliminary evidence from these three incidents seems clear:
police acted with excessive and brutal force.
And on the face of it, created a serious threat to public safety. #nswpol
Hi friends! I’m starting a newsletter to share updates on my writing. I’ll send out occasional emails with some of my recent articles and updates on the book I’m working on which is about climate change, religion and something called rapture anxiety.

We knew from the moment we heard it that “social cohesion” would be one of those Orwellian terms which would be used to cover all manner of state sanctioned abuse and deprivation of civic freedoms.
It fuels the very unrest it pretends to seek to quell.
The footage out of Sydney overnight is abhorrent.
Peaceful protesters set upon by an army of police, punches thrown at people with raised hands, people praying ripped from their knees.
Is this violence the social cohesion that Labor wanted?
The footage of Australian police acting like ICE agents is pretty shocking, but the media broadly stepping up to downplay, deny and mis-describe their violence in ambiguous terms is completely unsurprising.
It's an industry fundamentally incapable of ever assigning any blame to the police: ever
Shared with us from Sydney happening now. He had his hands up.
This cartoon of his lives rent free in my brain.
Vale Jon Kudelka; not many better at summing up the issues of the day with great brevity and wit, but also with such vivid, arresting images. A true master of his art.
