🇪🇺🏳️‍🌈⚖️🇭🇺 A legal earthquake - CJEU finds Hungary to have violated EU law on multiple counts with its anti-LGBT+ legislation (as expected) but also for the first time in history, in an EU law-reshaping precedent, finds Hungary to violate Art 2 TEU in a self-standing manner.

Mr Orbán's Fidesz built itself an electoral system that boosted it until it didn't.

In 2014, the first year under the system, Fidesz-KDNP won a ⅔ majority with 27% of the registered voters. Now, with 30% of registered voters, it is on track to 29% of the seats.

a personalist movement using populist messaging and triumphing after all ideological differences in the opposition had to be purged to create sufficient mass and momentum (pun intended). And it only took 16 years to pass in the heavily tilted landscape. What more can one want from 'democracy'

I guess partly what I mean is that the incentive to show in the one published paper that the result is robust to 100 pseudo robustness tests is all the stronger, with dubious implications for quality. But I agree that maybe this is the preferred equilibrium in a constrained set

other than when it comes to publication bias. But I guess that's not really a concern because every result is robust and incontrovertible

not at all related to the OP but it just struck me how this is yet another facet of the varying salience of judicial politics in the US vs anywhere else. Court watchers are so sparse this side of the globe that we can't afford a single one of them to quit lest we be condemned to eternal darkness

A 🧵on how the @vdeminstitute.bsky.social accountability indices help us understand how democratic backsliding is occurring in the United States.

tl;dr: in principle, vertical constraints on the president remain strong; in practice, horizontal and diagonal constraints have been greatly weakened.
