"For the better part of a year, Monet got up at 3:30 am and painted haystacks."
A writer walks through the Art Institute of Chicago and this is only one of the insights we get. I'm bookmarking this Substack for return visits.

I know ppl had mixed feeling about the last season of The Bear, but I was pro. I think their bottle episodes are doing something we haven't seen on TV, and I love the slow pacing/deep character that some people loathe. Sue me: I also don't like deep dish pizza!

Can't wait to watch the new season of The Bear, which is why I yakked about the pilot episode on the podcast with @ralphwalker.bsky.social

Season 3, Episode 5: The Bear Spicy characters rage and sweat in this fast-paced TV show set in a Chicago restaurant

HEARD!
The new episode of Writing in the Dark is all about The Bear and what prose writers can learn from it. Had a lot of fun deep dishing with @ralphwalker.bsky.social on character, conflict, and Chicago. Thanks, as always, for listening--

To all the moms, "moms" & people who give care and nurturing to other humans: we see you and we celebrate you.

And since you can't get paid parental leave or subsidized childcare or a shred of fucking respect as a parent in this country, I hope you at least got a nap and 20 minutes of alone time.

There is so much in America I don’t want to see. And I don’t mean the suffering. I mean the entertainment, the consumerism, the success, the celebritism, the sickness disguised as having it all.

Monthly reminder: Many people have a book in them, but it takes a special kind of freak to leave the Land of Laziness, cross the Plains of Procrastination and Insecurity Mountain, find the Blade of No One Made You Do This, and use it to cut your chest open and yank that book out.
