I wrote about losing my grandfather while working in the ICU during the worst of the COVID pandemic, and how that experience forever changed my perspectives on grief and death as a physician.

Thanks so much to the Threepenny Review.

Whenever I have the compulsion to write, I always think about this quote.

Joan Didion on grief:

"Here lies the heart of the difference between grief as we imagine it and grief as it is: the unending absence that follows, the void...the relentless succession of moments during which we will confront the experience of meaninglessness itself."

Steinbeck, on the stories we give power to.

Every little sentence is a marvel. When he first described Liza Hamilton ("her head was small and round and it held small round convictions") I nearly gasped.

Reading East of Eden for the first time. Steinbeck never fails to absolutely take my breath away.

The phrase "the colossal vitality of his illusion" lives rent-free in my head at all times. This book is an absolute masterpiece.

The entire novel is a dire warning of the dangers of idealism, as well as the fine line between deserved hope and delusion--and this quote is at the very heart of it.

No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man can store up in his ghostly heart.

I've never read a better explanation of why Russian short stories hit home the way they do.

"They were written to challenge and antagonize and outrage. And, in a complicated way, to console."

~George Saunders, A Swim in A Pond in the Rain

Omg. I almost never find anyone who loves Elizabeth Gaskell as much as I do. North and South and Wives and Daughters are absolutely MASTERFUL

I get the dog walking ideas too! I have her to thank for several short stories...

Thinking about my life as a consequence of the universe's need to amuse itself does comfort me πŸ˜‚

Can someone please explain why great ideas NEVER come to me when I am sitting at my desk trying to write, and instead exclusively appear, unprompted, when I am in the shower #writersky #writingcommunity #IAmWriting #booksky #writer #author

Yo! Shoutout to AOC & Bernie for leading by example β€” showing up, speaking truth & organizing w/the people, not just talking at them from D.C.

We need that same energy from all Dems. Whether it’s 35,000 or 35 people β€” show up. Hit the streets, hit the town halls, show you’re ready to fight for us.

I love this!! Also very glad to hear I am not the only one with theme songs for stories...or even playlists for characters πŸ™ˆ

1 year ago 1 0 0 0

I found that picking a single theme song for a story and listening to it before sitting down to write (and possibly also picking an hour long instrumental-only ambient track and listening to it on repeat while writing) can help a lot with remaining consistent, for example.

That last part is so key!!! I think the guilt is a bigger offender (and block to creativity) than anything!

For everyone who is writing while balancing a full-time job: how do you manage to keep up your consistency and creativity? What do you do when you need to reset and recharge? What advice would you give to anyone in the same position?

At this point it is nothing less than an overt cash grab. Let it be known that I was satisifed after 1995!!

Absolutely horrific. Shocked that this is the first I am hearing of it.

I have worked with children of abuse, neglect, and adversity for many years and now work with adults who often have histories of trauma. This is absolutely appalling and hateful.

I cannot overstate the importance of reading books, particularly novels by respected authors, for critical thinking skills and reading comprehension. If the big gun novelists don't interest you, start small and work your way up. Or read whatever interests you. Just read. Or listen. It's all books.
