Mattins is a great name for a church or clergy cat (Magnificat has become something of a cliche, after all)
Christ so often seem to reveal himself most clearly as he (apparently) withdraws from us. Perhaps it’s because we cannot yet bear much more than that.
This is a good thread. There’s so much to say about the Emmaus reading, but this time round what strikes me as how much it’s a picture of what discipleship is like for us, perhaps especially in that we often don’t recognise God’s presence with us except in near-retrospect.
"Are you on social media? Do not delete your account. Are you off social media? Do not get an account. But if you post you do not sin, and if a person with no social media joins, she does not sin. Yet those who post will experience distress in this life, and I would spare you that."⚓️🕯️
amend our lives
The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting.
Let us do without soldiers. The joy built upon successful slaughter is not the right kind of joy; it will not do; it is fearful and it is trivial.
But in time nothing can be without becoming.
Being on the right dose of ADHD meds is weird because I can focus on stuff, not feel tired in the afternoon, and aren't overwhelmed by the idea of starting a complicated task.
All strength to Rumeysa Ozturk, who announced today she will be returning to Turkey.
Rumeysa was arrested and detained by immigration agents last year as part of ongoing pro-Palestine repression.
Last week, fed administration fired the immigration judge who rejected DHS efforts to deport her.
With regard to the blustery ignorance of self-identified Christians, I accidentally shocked some lifelong parishioners a few years back by preaching about resurrection as our telos rather than heaven.
And that was people who'd actually been around and participated a lot!
American catechesis is BAD, and any expectation that everyone participate in ongoing formation evaporated well over a hundred years ago in the Mainline.
A priest once said to our confirmands, that he memorized the absolutions in the rite of reconciliation. That the place he’s heard the most confessions is in Grand Central Terminal, so to have those on lock so he’d be present to the stranger who stopped him.
americans stop inventing puritanism (impossible difficulty)
They specifically keep inventing puritanism! Without grace! Please stop!
*sigh, rubs temples* Ah yes the Fallen World, again, these people tired of Christianity who just rebuild it from scratch are wild
The thing about the Trump admin's ongoing pushback to Pope Leo: it sounds *very* similar to the GOP's reaction to the early years of Pope Francis' papacy, when he published encyclicals/exhortations stressing the need to care for the poor and address climate change. newrepublic.com/article/1219...
No matter how insufferable you might be, at least you didn’t godsplain to the pope
I was recently talking to a journalist who lives in HK and asked how they feel re freedom and they said no problems at all, with the caveat, "but I don't write about HK"
I grew up Baptist with my senior pastor always telling us in his sermons, “But do NOT take my word for it. Go home, read your Bible yourselves, and come talk to me.” I really took to heart that religious authority may be wrong. I’m still a Protestant, no matter how small-c catholic I may also be.
I know I need to go to sleep. I worry tomorrow will be some new, awful thing.
A black and white cat loafing on a couch.
Most loyal cat. 😿
I’m pulling an all-nighter to write a paper that is v late, unfortunately. And my poor cat won’t leave me, but is instead staying up with me on the couch instead of ditching me to go to bed by herself. And I feel bad!!! 😭
being weak on crime is sort of a foundational premise of christianity
the pope is weak on crime? wait until you hear about jesus
This does not seem like the time in history to cut Religious Studies programs, but what do I know?
Mayor Zohran Mamdani behind the counter of a bodega in The Bronx, flanked by various people. A journalist with a microphone labeled “Shop Cats” is standing in front of the sales counter, and holding the mic up to a black and white cat sitting on the counter next to bananas. The cat has an expression like in the famous “Sir, are you aware that you are a cat” meme
“Sir, are you aware that you are a cat, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani is standing right behind you?”
White people should stop using the word “intersectional” until *they* figure out what’s going on.
