We wasted decades not moving to non emitting technology. And yes, China's growth in wind and solar put us to absolute shame.

The context is specifically wind and solar (and battery). Depending on the project, hydro can have pretty heavy environmental impact. And to repeat. Hydro dropped. Per the article, due to drought. Which climate change is apt to exacerbate.
Hydro dropped. Natural gas increased much more than wind and solar. And coincidentally, here is TVO putting Ontario's projects into perspective

Today is Earth Day, but each year it can feel a little more like Groundhog Day.
While we replay the same pipeline debates in Canada, the rest of the world is racing ahead on renewable energy — which is growing so fast that it met all new electricity demand in 2025.

It wasn't understandable. It is regressive.
Jean Charest was also on Trudeau's committee. But I do think Trudeau's was much more balanced - he also had NDP folks on it for example.

Around 50 nations will meet here to discuss fossil-fuel transition.
They have already been circulated a draft report recommending that they “halt all new expansion”, according to an exclusive by me for @carbonbrief.org

On the left: an image of a Canadian toonie coin on a yellow background; the centre image of the coin has been replaced by an oil well. On the right: text that reads “The rollercoaster price of oil is bad for almost everyone. These volatile numbers make everything more expensive.”
Canada is profiting from oil volatility but falling behind in the energy transition. As countries like the UK and China scale renewables, the real risk isn’t just inflation—it’s losing economic ground. Is today’s boom masking tomorrow’s setback? https://ow.ly/irKI50YLrzg

Picture of street filled with people when cars are prohibited, with a prominent sign saying “road closed.” Via Urban Truth Collecrive (Also, it’s a street, not a road)
How come they keep spelling “open” wrong?
Does that street look closed to you? Only if you’re a car… and presumably that’s the real problem. #UrbanTruth
What I thought were Canadian values are falling by the wayside
THREAD: The IEA global energy review 2026
* CO2 record high, but growth nearly ground to halt
* Clean energy shaved 3bn tonnes off CO2
* Fossil-fuel power pushed into reverse
* Age of Electricity "confirmed"
* "Extraordinary" solar growth
* Batteries up 40%
* EVs up 20%

A good reminder to go tell the Canadian government to do something about those bright headlights blinding people who drive at night.
How does he rationalize that with Tim Hodgson's statements?

The US wants to achieve energy dominance. We support you in that view ... we want to help you achieve that energy dominance

Most developed countries have now submitted the 2026 editions of their formal greenhouse gas emissions inventories to the UNFCCC.

I have some pretty dark thoughts too :)
I meant delaying climate action. I'm not actually convinced he accepts the need and/or our responsibility to reduce emissions.
Thanks to @lindsaytedds.bsky.social for a very helpful review of how we got here.

Those of us who want action to reduce GHGs (and save citizens money over time) are often accused of being idealogues. So many of Ford's policies are lacking in evidence or business case that they seem to be driven by ideology.
This needs to be taken seriously. Along with underfunding, Doug Ford is destroying the university system. And yes, this latest move is 100% in line with what we've seen happening by state-level MAGA-hats in the US.
Thank you but I think this should be noted:
“The U.S. executive order imposing a fuel blockade on Cuba is a serious violation of international law and a grave threat to a democratic and equitable international order,” the experts said.

Great job by Ross here, setting out why the gas tax cut is ill-considered.
I like his final point that it is a sign of freedom and a free society to have prices fluctuate. Societies with stagnant prices that never move are not the kind of places you'd want to live.
Canada's official greenhouse gas report for 2024 is out today. It confirms what our Early Estimate of National Emissions found last fall.
Canada’s climate progress has been modest and is at risk of going in the wrong direction. Here are some key takeaways⬇️🧵
