I could not finish this episode.
It starts with common and sad reality of an unsuspecting victim getting struck by a car. Then Dr Tai describes in painstaking detail the victim’s condition, how it impacts the individual and their family.
It just kept getting more depressing until I turned it off.

Transit Signal Priority, using traffic signal technology to give advantages to transit like being able to trigger green lights faster to stay on schedule
1. Lane trap is converting thru lane to turn lane, typically done to reduce # of thru lanes on the opposite side of intersection. This being a just rendering some of these details are hard to see.
2. See relevant MUTCD text
3. Agree, not sure why they went this route.
Even if AI had one redeeming feature (it doesn’t) it would not be worth the millions of horrible things it’s doing. Garbage for the environment, accountability, critical thinking and steals work from creative professionals.
In this case there’s a bit going on 1) This is a lane trap (single lane beyond the intersection means second lane needs to get dropped somewhere) 2) I assume there’s no funding for signal separation as required by MUTCD if you wanted to keep the bike right of right turns. 3) lots of right turns here
Is there a place that does this well? Colorado Blvd (the street mostly highlighted in the pics you’re showing) will be favored for green anyway since it’s the Main Street. Also the actual plans (not early renderings shown) has about a dozen intersections with ped refuge islands along Colorado Blvd.
Far from perfect but I wish critics would appreciate how much advocates overcame to develop a grassroots design (search “Beautiful Boulevard”) that included protected bike lanes, dedicated bus lanes, and landscaped medians in Eagle Rock. Original proposals had no bike lanes and killed medians.
FWIW I believe the max cycle length is 90 seconds. I support ped refuge islands but I’m not seeing how it would reduce crossing distance- curb extensions would do that and some are incorporated into design. The BRT stop has stations in the middle that effectively function as refuge islands.
In addition to the bike racks being far from main entrance and impossible to get to with a cargo bike, exact same thing happens at my target. People just don’t know how to design parking 90% of the time and certainly don’t respect it even when designed decently.
OMFG
They broke long delayed & now delayed MORE, Public transit to LAX to make the road wider (which is a terrible terrible idea in the first place
YOU GUYS THEY BROKE THE PEOPLE MOVER BY BUILDING THEIR DAMN LAX-PRESSWAY???
The only candidates that said they unambiguously favor billionaire tax were Thurmond, Steyer, and Yee.
Looking for more banner issues that will set candidates apart.
Steyer is most progressive frontrunner from what I can tell.
Love the yard sign but don’t live in Berkeley anymore. Can the site sell posters to support the cause?
It was so magical to see the sudden ownership people felt of their streets and how people just walked in the middle of the street and families went biking together on streets otherwise riddled with car traffic. I’ll never forget it (and how quickly it disappeared)
Show me one redeeming quality of AI because right now it seems like the best thing we can do is ban the use of it.
Listen to part 1 of 2 of my interview with @norton.bsky.social about his books, robotaxis, and changing social norms around how streets are used
My urban arrow has been in shop since late December because the proprietary enviolo hub needed to be replaced and enviolo just doesn’t have them in stock… they say they’ll be able to ship replacement to shop at end of Feb.
Ah ok, so nothing would convince them. And two things can be true- upzoned can be more valuable but the housing it produces would be more affordable on per square foot or per unit basis
Everything has its faults- don’t follow “the discourse” on housing closely but couldn’t left be won over with 1) which is more sustainable- low or high density? 2) which is more affordable- low or high density?
Are they looking for density without displacement? Only public housing?
Anything is possible with money and support! (See Ballona Creek extension from zero to EIR and design la.urbanize.city/post/state-a... )
Real question IMO is are we better off making Arroyo Seco car free or making Fig car free roughly Ave 57 to Ave 54 + protected lanes (assuming we can’t have both)
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is posting before/after pics of some of the city’s street transformations and I am reminded we could have this in Los Angeles too. In fact we did for a few hours during ArroyoFest.
If only there were political will to fully ban cars from the Arroyo Seco Parkway!
Do you know of anyone with that job/title? I find planners tend to be generous with time if you want to talk to them about their path.
I knew I wanted to do “bike planning” but it took time to get where I am now (which I love and bike stuff is a big focus of my work but not exclusively what I do)
Is the bike lane on Esplanaden still there? I don’t see it on google maps. As you may know, the first bike path in Los Angeles was the elevated bike path completed in 1900 but it was torn down and never fully built out as the commuter corridor it was envisioned as
The first modern “Class II” bike lane in Los Angeles dates from about 1974 and the first time car lanes were eliminated to make space for bike lanes happened in 1979 and 1980.
When were the first bike lanes painted in your city? Or when were car lanes converted to bike lanes?
CBOs get exposure; businesses can get a boost; govt does outreach; organizers + political candidates can get people involved in causes/campaigns; people temporarily get free recreation, better air, and safer streets in park poor LA; There’s a lot to like. And our bike share is still publicly run 😇
Simpsons predicted this with Linguo

A receipt for the preorder of the book Life After Cars by Doug Gordon and Sarah Goodyear
It genuinely felt good to preorder order this book by @brooklynspoke.bsky.social and @sgoodyear.bsky.social
I look forward to their live show at Dynasty Typewriter, which incidentally is right next to MacArthur Park where the city plans to pedestrianize two blocks of Wilshire Bl to expand the park
A rider POV picture from an Urban Arrow cargo bike in the hills of Northeast LA with a view of a beautiful sunset in October.
The Dutch mindset can’t comprehend riding a cargo bike in a setting this hilly (and sunny).
Correct me if I’m wrong but hasn’t this been finished for a long time now? I saw all this when I visited a 1yr+ ago. Were there finishing touches that just completed?
