2012, and my copy is a 2014 paperback.
Somehow missed this when it came out. Found this copy today in Oxfam Bookshop Herne Hill. Already up to p85. Partly about how the narrator, a writer, struggles to find the money to write. Not a concern for Gwendoline Riley since she bagged the £130,000 Windham-Campbell Prize. Good for her.
What a lovely bit of bookshelf. I edited Burnt Island, which I loved. I also love Housekeeping. And then there’s my three books… ☺️
I did like the suggestion that the trilogy might turn into a tetralogy… 😉
Thank you, Kaggsy. That’s more than made my day. You are very generous.
I’m almost too modest to repost this.
See me.
Well, indeed.
How can I take University Challenge seriously if its makers think hyphens and en-dashes are interchangeable?
Now playing. The sound of snow falling forever. Beautiful album.
I’ll report back when back among my books.
What a splendid bookshelf ☺️
I feel, when I wear my dad’s glasses, which I do every day, that he’s not a million miles away. Even though he died in 1994.
Yes. I haven’t yet read any of the others.
I’d probably include it in my top ten novels (as long as I can have about 50 novels in my top ten).
I hope I didn’t get anything wrong, David.
It is, but I should have jumped on that.
Ah, a film wouldn’t have counted for that survey, but still clearly of interest. Come to think of it, didn’t another novel of yours have the same title as a film?
Thank you, Roland. Certainly there’s a sense that everything before p166 is kind of building towards it: p1, p2, p3 and so on.
That counts. Had I come across a copy I would have included it.
"Finders, Keepers: The Secret Life of Second-hand Books", the new book by @nicholasroyle.bsky.social , is very good. Especially page 166.
Also, NR likes BRIAN ( @fitzcarraldoeds.bsky.social ). As do we all.
I’m going to use that.
That’s great, that Wendy’s remarks make a difference, but I look at French publishing and they don’t do it.
We should get rid of cover quotes.

Merci, Caroline. I’m delighted you’re enjoying the stories.
Thank you Gregory – and THANK YOU Caroline! That’s made my day.
Was Philip Roth ever photographed with a bunch of grapes? Missed caption opportunity if not.
