It wasn’t the first illustrated newspaper, but it was probably an early form of the tabloid.
Was probably pretty novel to have a newspaper that wasn’t 100% text articles. They were usually just a few pages.
The Victorians loved a bit of “true” crime. The most disturbing and lurid the better.
Illustrated newspapers were also a bit of a thing, since photographic reproduction had yet to be.
Put the two together and you get…The Illustrated Police News. Founded in 1864, it ran until 1938. Blimey.
Thankfully my tastes are broadly indie and JRPGs which aren’t too taxing.
The games I have recently been playing on it are/were “Trails in the Sky, the 3rd”, “Phantom Brave” and “Cassette Beasts”.
Would still like to mod the screen but the iFixit instructions are around 20 steps. 😑
Took a few more months but appears every form of Steam Deck (LCD + OLED) is now Out of Stock in the UK.
I’ve got the launch LCD model and was getting fomo when they released the OLED (but couldn’t justify the expense). No more temptation now.
Hopefully Steam Deck 2 launches with OLED…in 2029
I suspect they took quite a few liberties for animation but I recall they did some serious choreography motion capture with Ray Park when they did the Clone Wars finale episodes.
Quite amazed how much Lucasfilm animation evolved. More detailed lighting and textures without losing unique designs
And that’s just swords. Swinging a lance or pole around in a corridor is even crazier, even if it is capable of cutting through anything.
I think you could just about manage foil fencing in a corridor though. That one is straight back and forth, and you can’t swing the thing - just lunge.
Bonus:
- I really struggle with seeing a dual bladed weapon being used in confined/narrow spaces.
MAUL: SHADOW LORD kicked off with two opening episodes.
+ Music and animation, excellent.
- Plot not quite gelling (so far). Too many threads for weekly show? (Some too cliché). Feels like opening chapters of a long novel
Love Star Wars animation so will see how things turn out.
It’s not unique to America. Every country has its own assumptions about the cultural output of the other.
And even within our own cultures: When people say something is “comic (book) style”, guaranteed they aren’t picturing Peanuts or Robert Crumb. Maybe the Archies.
Conan always cracks the case in the end
In my head, when people say “manga style” it is usually that of shonen manga. Very fast paced, action heavy, overdramatic, broadly unsubtle
Though presumably that has radically shifted over time as more material got translated.
Short obituary for Hermann
Last night I finished “Trails in the Sky, the 3rd”. A rather bloated epilogue to the first two parts. I can’t remember how long it took me to finish. I am hoping it is less than 6 months. Might have been more.
In all three games, Tita remained the most invaluable party member.

If I recall correctly, the PS5 price in UK has gone from £379.99 to £449.99 to £479.99 to £569.99.
I miss when these things would go down in price over time.
Yikes. Those new prices. The PS5 doesn’t look worth it for that money.
If you really, really dig the art, there is the giant omnibus French edition - sans colour, just the inks (and lettering)
I did a review of the first English language print release of Western The Undertaker.
This was one of those rare books that was so engaging that I managed it more or less in one sitting (excluding tea breaks)
Big interview on the upcoming continuation of the classic British space opera Trigan Empire bu Michael Carroll & Tom Foster. Featuring the creative team, editor Oliver Pickles, and Rebellion’s Head of TV and Publishing Ben Smith
Special thanks to @2000ad.bsky.social for helping set this up
Highlighted text describing one aspect of a kilometres sized meteorite hitting a plant: “secondary craters can occur anywhere over the entire planet as debris re-enters the atmosphere.”
Huh. Didn’t consider that part.

I just find the 8-bit style videogame font and the “for nerds” part slightly offensive. It has a whiff of disdain and mockery in the phrasing, instead of respecting the company, its fans/readers, and its legacy.
Was glancing at the Dark Horse website and noticed the branding had been changed. Not sure when. Assuming within the last few weeks.
I’ve made several attempts to watch the One Piece anime and have given up within a couple episodes. The decompression and filler drives me crazy. Hopefully the new one in development will be a more satisfactory watch.
If it catches up to where I am with the manga (~v68), that would be impressive.
My latest update on the Angoulême situation - several stories packed into one
Just spotted. Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle is discounted to £399.99 at John Lewis. RRP is £429.99. Since games devices of late have had a tendency to go up in price instead of down, might want to jump on this.
Just realised that I have already passed the 20 year mark as a regular reader of 2000 AD.
The newsagent near my sixth form college, where I bought my first copy, is now a nail parlour - but the compelling Thrills in every issue remain the same.
(My first issue was released February 22nd, 2006)
Sounds reasonable (from Judge Dredd Case Files vol 3)
Finished One Piece season 2. Fight sequences are variable in quality (season finale didn’t entirely work for me) but it nails the playfulness and tone of the original.
Can’t personally compare with anime version, mind, as I preferred the manga original.
Also: they nailed Chopper’s CGI design
