Enabling fast greenhouse gas emissions inference from satellites with GATES: a Graph-Neural-Network Atmospheric Transport Emulation System Abstract. Atmospheric observation-based β€œinverse” greenhouse gas flux estimates are increasingly important to evaluate national inventories. A dramatic improvement in β€œtop-down” flux inference is expe...

Our graph-neural-network atmospheric dispersion model emulator, GATES, is now published!
We demonstrate accurate emissions estimates for Brazil, but with a model that is 1000x faster.
This work enables timely, improved evaluations of national GHG inventories.

I've been supervising Josh on this work, it's amazing to think that this is an undergraduate project! He has done some great work so far and I'm excited to see it develop further.

Thank you Sergei for showcasing the project!

PhD Profiles: Harry, PhD Student in Quantum Engineering, University of Bristol Discover key insights on PhD applications and experiences from Harry, University of Bristol quantum engineering CDT PhD student

Many PhD students feel pressure to have their research interests figured out early, but that’s rarely the case.

I’ve published a new PhD Profile with Harry, a @bristoluni.bsky.social PhD student.

www.thesavvyscientist.com/phd-profiles...

❓ Did you know what you wanted to research at the start?

Citations certainly aren’t everything.

Still, a review article citing three papers from your PhD in one go doesn't hurt.

I passed my PhD. If I gave my PhD certificate to my stepmother’s cat, that wouldn’t make her a doctor.

As you'd probably expect the Royal Society is an interesting place to explore, with heaps of history. There are frequently public events (I was last there presenting at one of these as part of my PhD!) so I recommend checking it out: royalsociety.org/science-even...

The arrival of AGI | Shane Legg (co-founder of DeepMind)
The arrival of AGI | Shane Legg (co-founder of DeepMind) YouTube video by Google DeepMind

Alongside interactive workshops, we heard from tech leaders such as DeepMind co-founder and chief AGI scientist Shane Legg.

We specifically got told to not summarise his thoughts on social media 🀐 but if you're interested I expect this recent podcast is comparable:

Recently I was fortunate to attend sessions on the future of AI at the Royal Society with funders, policy makers, tech leaders, and fellow academics.

Thanks everyone for making it a great event!

This week I've been at ECML in Porto and today at the social good workshop presented our work aiming to gain insights into the decision making process and progression of climate policy through the European Parliament.

The work was led by the excellent Patricia West as an undergraduate project!

Today I joined #FastForGaza for the day β€” a small act, nothing compared to the suffering Palestinians endure daily.

I'm ashamed that publicly I’ve been far too silent for far too long.

While working on projects to save lives, I can’t stay quiet as my government helps enable this ongoing horror.

Improving Local Air Quality Predictions Using Transfer Learning on Satellite Data and Graph Neural Networks Climate Change AI - ICLR 2025 Accepted Work

It's always great to see work from an undergrad project get published rather than being buried on a hard drive!

Today a student I supervised from @bristoluni.bsky.social presented their project at an #ICLR2025 workshop. 🌎πŸ₯³
