I just had to give up on the scenario for the Realmwalker ashcan; too much pressure and paralysis on coming up with the perfect intro.
Nobody tells you quickstarts are terrifying. All the work you put into a game, then you try and sell it in about 25% of that space? And some of that space is a scenario?
Fucking criminal, man.

Hey, I did a chunk of writing for Realmwalker awhile back, and this previews some of the work I did! Go give it a look, it was a fascinating setting to contribute to. #ttrpg
The GM’s duty is to manage tone and atmosphere, but they should allow players to invent ways to overcome obstacles mostly as they feel is appropriate for their character. Dice are only rolled when the results tell us something interesting!
I thought a lot about when should players have a risk of failure. I wanted to support any character concept (floating skull, ghost, personification of night) I decided the character can do whatever their concept states they can and succeeds unless some other entity cares enough to oppose them.
Additionally there's no math involved other than assembling your pool, and from the playtesting folks got excited about rolling a large set similarly to how they do for a natural 20.
That game is more gritty than I wanted, so I switched to d6s and found a weak success was pretty likely with 4+ dice while a critical success remained rare but possible at most pool sizes and unlikely even at the max of 10. This matched my desired play feel pretty well.
I was inspired by Greg Stolze's m A Dirty World, which has characters interacting by “attacking” each other's traits socially or physically. This captured that sense of influencing someone regardless of their level; you can harm a demon's Wrath or a crime lord's Greed to push them to act different.
