So, @mcnallyrobinson.com in Winnipeg are one of my true ‘home bookstores’ and they now offer free shipping anywhere in Canada for orders of $50 and up. I just placed another order and thought I’d alert others they can do this. They’re great. I sign there with every book release.

Happy reading.

A WHOLE CIVILIZATION
WILL DIE TONIGHT
My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools.
Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's
"keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's
"we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight."
It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before.
"It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time.
A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead.

Things that help calm the nervous system, quickly:

- Box breathing (in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4, repeat)
- Immerse your face in cold water (activates mammalian dive reflex)
- Humming (stimulates vagus nerve)
- Exercise (anything helps, outside even better)
- Impeachment and removal

The only thing I'm clinging to right now is the wisdom I learned from being raised in an intergenerational home : We have been here before, we have to take control of what we can, we have to trust in our ability to show up for each other and we have to be generous with our I Love Yous.

So when do we actually take the car keys from grandpa before needless people start dying because of his dementia, especially when he’s sundowning and making criminal threats to run everyone over? By car keys I mean nuclear codes. By run everyone over I mean wipe out a civilization.

Got chased by a couple of geese on my way into a building, even though I gave them lots of room as I walked by. One actually hissed at me. I am low-key shook. #spring #winnipeg #urbanwildlife

A recycling bank with compartments for plastics, appliances, etc.

Did the good citizen thing at London Drugs and dropped off batteries, LED bulbs, 2 small appliances, and styrofoam all in one trip!

Did YOU know London Drugs is such a great urban recycling solution in #yyj and Western Canada?

People talk about “public transit” like it’s some abstract policy debate, but it’s literally the difference between someone getting to work or losing their job.

A bus that runs on time isn’t a luxury. It’s dignity, mobility, and a shot at stability.

Folly of Canada’s oil, gas addiction clear

SCOTT FORBES

IN the 1976 film classic, Network, news anchor Howard Beale during his evening broadcast shouts into the camera: “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore.” It was his protest against inflation, corporate greed and crime.

It so resonated with viewers that people around the country, as prompted, opened their windows and shouted the same. His ratings soared (Donald Trump would be proud). A half-century later, there is an eerie sense of deja vu.

The folly of Canada’s addiction to oil and gas has never been more clear. With the price of crude rising at record speed, the fossil fuel industry is profiteering from war in the Middle East. Prices at the pump are soaring, to be soon followed by supercharged inflation across the economy.

And Scotiabank now predicts the Bank of Canada will raise rates three times in 2026, so the cost of your mortgage is going up. And for what?

So we can continue to coddle the oil and gas cartel? Most of our political class, with one exception — new NDP Leader Avi Lewis — are in the pockets of Big Oil: the three Prairie premiers, and the leaders of the two largest federal parties.

They all want to double down on expanded fossil fuel production in our country, spurred on by powerful, well-funded fossil fuel lobby groups. They desire to loot the public purse for tens of billions more in subsidies for new pipelines in every direction, a fleet of Arctic icebreakers and associated infrastructure and for absurdly expensive carbon capture to pretend to care about the carnage from climate change.

I won’t even mention the immorality of promoting planet-killing emissions: it’s the economics that make zero sense. Building

out expensive infrastructure doomed to become stranded assets.

Are all these people promoting a fossil-fuel future really that obtuse?

Maybe you haven’t noticed, but the big four in the tar sands, Cenovus, Exxon (Imperial Oil), Canadian Natural Resources, and…

"It’s time to declare we’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore. It’s time to end the oil-fuelled boom-and-bust cycles."

This book is a beautifully harsh discussion about the politics of identity, journalism, power, resistance and the self interest/complacency of western liberalism, among many other things. It’s an essential read.

Do parents teach their teens about cell phone etiquette? Particularly around taking photos of others? My 13 yo daughter told me some boys (same age) were taking pictures of her and her friend while they were eating lunch. This seems weird and creepy to me. Am I overreacting?
