Heart - Dreamboat Annie (1976)

A classic hard rock debut showcasing a lot of diverse guitar and flute styles from Nancy and Ann Wilson. Pretty badass all around , with major singles “Magic Man” and “Crazy on You.”

The Police - Outlandos d'Amour (1978)

Killer debut from reggae-rockers The Police , one might argue their best with hits like “So Lonely,” “Roxanne,” the punk classic “Can’t Stand Losing You” and the brilliantly catchy dub closer “Masoko Tanga.”

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (1979)

From the opening snare hits you can tell the production on every instrument on this album is on point. Ian Curtis delivers big , sweeping baritone performances like Jim Morrison or Johnny Cash. It’s definitely locked in.

But there’s an episode of Ray Donovan that has the “Horses, horses, horses, horses!” song in it and ever since hearing that one and some of the more quoted lyrics from Horses I’ve always had this uneasy curiosity what the rest of the album sounds like

Oh okay she sings that song ? Now I know why her voice sounds so much more familiar than her songs. She reminds me of a lot of 80’s Pat Benatar type singers and the songs that lean into that to the point where they’re danceable are good. I was always expecting something a tiny bit more abrasive

it just sounds like Tusk era Fleetwood Mac with Jesse Lacey writing the lyrics and you know that’s facts

There’s a couple of good pop songs on this but the lyrics ruin it and pompous self seriousness and juvenile shock value of it is just honestly crass.

Patti Smith just wallows in every big production album rock cliche that punk was supposed to be a reaction against . Just one boring 9 minute long Dylan tribute after another , no feeling , no effort , absolutely robotic and stale

A major part of the reason I wanted to pursue music as a career was to not have to deal directly with people . It made being in a local band weird because that just sitting at the bar. I know people that are streaming now with the stated purpose of getting more listeners , i don’t understand it

The Knack - Get the Knack (1979)

A power-pop cornerstone with the major hits “My Sharona” and “ Good Girls Don’t.” Rock and roll in the old-school style with a Queen-esque brilliance on “Maybe Tonight.”
