But don't you see? That character has an ambiguous gender on account of currently being a pencil, which means the best thing to do would be to ignore the Japanese version's choice (potentially informed by input from the author) of a female voice actor and default to male.

And from that point in, the show just locks in on this singular track, where understanding what's actually happening to cause the anxiety obliterates the tension and mystery that made the show. Even the gorgeous and creative camera work becomes more "Netflix" and less interesting.

There's just this crazy quality to those early episodes of ever-escalating tension with no release, perfectly putting us in Rachel's shoes of this general Bad Feeling that never goes away, with the perfect fakeout of her early suspicions always being wrong. Then that tension is released in episode 4
