Anyway sorry for the huge crackpot thread - sucks that I think we're all having to become the Pepe Silvia meme these days. I just wanted to put my full explanation and perspective up because I know some folks have been wondering (yes server is KILL💥). Whatever happens, I know I'll see ya somewhere.

The hard part is that we know each other and we already have that. You don't need ANY company to be connected to others. Literally behold ur beautiful power of friendship. Even us who use it for income, it's basically just passing the same $20 back and forth with corpos taking a cut at each handoff.

But I've seen so many of the "I gotta stay on Twitter" talking points repeated about Discord - folks, to quote a pal of mine (@oneobese.bsky.social), "none of this shit is permanent." The internet's a big place, we can all post anywhere we want. No platform gets to own your friendships.

I'm not saying everyone else should drop Discord right now. This isn't like Twitter where I really think you should just be off there by now. I know for sure I'm getting way ahead of myself on this one. But when there's BS in the air - I just want it done with. Now I get to be at ease about it.

Patreon doesn't matter to me - I use it as an open library (no pledge required for anything) for my silly little shitposts and their voice audio, I can host that in a damn dropbox if I have to. Twitch, YouTube (coming I'm sure)... I wanna see what people are doing before pulling any big triggers.

Twitch and Patreon have been hitting new creators with Persona registration, which is extra stupid because they have our literal bank info, I've been hoping users will put up enough stink to at least get them to drop the Persona deal. I'm gonna have to assess all this shit one platform at a time.

Like I said, doesn't stop at Discord but that's the only one where stakes were too high for my liking. "Oh my data's out there anyway" sorry but they're trying REALLY hard in openly fascist times to get us all on a registry - I'm not sure we should just walk into it willingly. They must want it bad.

Crazed overkill? Absolutely. And a billion percent worth it to not have to worry about this platform - run into the ground instantly upon going for public trading - being where I host the most important shit in my life, my life's work, my friends. We can ALWAYS walk. The internet's a big place.

I also took the liberty of immediately re-occupying the handle to prevent impersonation (somewhat, it happens anyway in the world) but even if the burner account were ever cracked (2fa'd and deleted the email address to it btw) it has no connection back to any of those friends or messages. I'm gone.

Sure I have 2FA, but so did a lot of hacked pals. I love all these crazy bastards, I'd rather burn it down to keep em safe. So I deleted all my messages to everyone, sent a DM explaining the situation and where to contact me, turned off DMs, closed the convo, removed friend, then nuked the account.

So the problem with JUST uninstalling for me is that if my account were ever compromised, it would risk sensitive information for these amazing folks I work with. The projects have public interest, but also because me and my buddies are woke as fuck, we're the targets of literal Nazi hate campaigns.

Clients with a lot of extremely sensitive information. I was never fully comfortable operating a lot of that stuff on Discord - the platform where I always have at least 1 hacked friend. I genuinely think it's possible in like 5, 10 years that they enshittify this platform into kind of a wasteland.

Discord has never really been more to me than a way out from Skype (which I'm still mad at for ending MSN Messenger, yes I'm still holding the Nudge Grudge). I've been operating on Discord for like a decade, during which I've used it to chat with many dear friends, and literally hundreds of clients.

Who's to say tomorrow, or in 6 months, Discord won't go "Ah! You need to Verify before you can change that server role/delete a server/remove that friend/delete this many messages/delete your account!" I have simply lost all trust for my future with it. Kids, that's when it's time to hit the bricks.

But that just means I'm really assessing where I need to put up with this shit. And I do not need Discord - most VO work (even my indie stuff) operates via email.

If every website is gonna enshittify, I'm gonna get picky about what I put up with. With their most recent "back down" (which just says they'll do stuff later when we hopefully forget a little), Discord proudly announced an axe hanging above my head for how much control I might have over my account.
