"The people who tell us that AI will dominate our future and take our jobs are the people who are hoping that will be true. They may be hoping this because it makes them feel important, or because they want to be billionaires, or because they simply do not understand other people."

I love this idea! I think for me, two shorthand terms I flag mentally if not on the page are "yak joke" and "baseball story". I think of them as universal but I think the first is an inside joke from high school and the second I may have made up entirely
When some French friends were helping me practise, we would read Asterix in French, and they loved explaining the jokes. Like in one book, the druid from Belgium was named Septantesix, a reference to the Belgian use of "septante" rather than "soixante-dix" for the number 70.
I wrote a short story set in the future where exactly this has happened, the Gulf Stream has moved away from Iceland making it close to inhabitable. przekroj.org/en/world-peo...
This is the most important thing you will read today – and probably the whole year, honestly.
We cannot let the AMOC collapse. For one thing it will make Iceland uninhabitable, and I would really like my children and grandchildren not to become refugees. But the effects will be almost everywhere.
So it's more of a Participation Arc de Triomphe, then
Your feeling of entitlement to free art does not supersede the reality of artists living at the poverty line.
Two fantastic authors here! #Ottawa

It's almost the weekend, which means it's time to read this can't-look-away, bonkers story about a Winnipeg business, known for coupon aggregation, that has churned out tens of thousands of AI-generated stories in recent months.

A flat brown cardboard package shaped like a ginormous raviolo on a pale wooden floor. A pair of legs in mid-blue jeans and thick, deep pink socks stand ready.
My right hand is holding up a paperback copy of HUMANS: A Monstrous History at an angle, in front of a bookcase brimming with brightly coloured books. The cover of HUMANS is mostly crimson, with bright yellow stylized lettering. A large, oval, whitish mirror with an elaborate black frame of SFF characters takes up the centre of the cover.
The back cover of HUMANS; my hand and the bookcase also in evidence.
A back cover detail showing the pull-quotes from published reviews.
The paperback of HUMANS: A MONSTROUS HISTORY from @ucpress is now in my hands!
There's new jacket copy! There are review quotations on the back:

this is why I think specfic can be such a valuable way to explore very difficult concepts, or political/philosophical ideas as yet untried in reality. Le Guin did it very well, of course. The abstraction through the extra layer of fictionalisation gives a lot of freedom.
A book cover with a flaming sword on it called "They Call Me An Angel"
The final chapter of They Call Me An Angel is now available to the public.

I'll begin editing it this weekend and hope to have ebook/paperback announcements in the coming weeks.
This is well worth the read.
