The Dickin Medal is the highest award that can be issued to animals in British military service. Bearing the words "We Also Serve" it has been awarded 75 times since its creation in 1943.

Only one cat has ever received the award.

This is the story of Able Seacat Simon, of HMS Amethyst. 🧵 1/25

A clam with a spring attached to the shell. The spring has a magnet placed above a sensor.

Hardly new info, but BSky should know:

Warsaw's water quality is monitored by eight clams with magnets attached to their shells. If contamination in the water causes the clams to close, the magnets trigger an alarm and shut off the city's water supply.
Thank you, little guardian molluscs.

back to back tweets — the first is from known dipshit Matt Walsh, who said, “Remember when they spent years telling us to panic over the hole in the ozone layer and then suddenly just stopped talking about it and nobody ever mentioned the ozone layer.”

the second is from @DKThomp, who said, “What happened is scientists
discovered chlorofluorocarbons were bad for the ozone, countries believed them, the Montreal Protocol was signed, and CFC use fell by 99.7%, leading to the stabilization of the ozone layer, perhaps the greatest example of global cooperation in history.”

Libraries matter more than ever now! They embody a beautiful & brilliant idea that we must never stop defending. The idea that knowledge is free & belongs to EVERYONE. We all need to support our libraries & librarians - especially when people seek to ban books & free thinking. #libraries #books

The Next War in the Air: Britain's Fear of the Bomber, 1908–1941 In the early twentieth century, the new technology of flight changed warfare irrevocably, not only on the battlefield, but also on the home front. As prophesied before 1914, Britain in the First World...

Perhaps a good time to reintroduce my thesis work! I'm looking at the long history of reuse and recycling practices in Cyprus. My research uses a new methodology and cataloguing mechanisms to record the quantity or reuse per object in order to better articulate pre-industrial circular economies

Hey everyone, I have an ask. Earlier this year, I left an extremely toxic work environment due to the effects it was having on my health. Since then, I’ve been slowly building up freelance creative work in the Tokyo area. It’s a bit too slow, though, and I need help rounding up more work, ASAP.

Ueno Station has changed a lot since 1927. This postcard is from the Kitagawa Chikashi Collection at the Edo-Tokyo Museum. From Ueno you could take the Ginza Line, the oldest subway line in Asia, to Asakusa, Tokyo's top entertainment district at the time, and maybe run into Yasunari Kawabata.

If I can finish proofreading and make the index in time, my new book will come out in January. 📖

I've been working on it for five years so I'm pretty excited that it will soon be a reality. I'd like to tell you a bit about it.
