I spent a lot of years reading rules and grokking mechanisms but, on reflection, none of that has really made my actual play better. Once I leaned into the imaginary Otherworld, everything changed.

Oh, I had the strong immersive experience from the get-go. Perhaps it was because the Ref managed all the rules and we just rolled dice, much like what was reported from the early days in the D&D scene. Going down the 'learn the rules' rabbit-hole was where the magic got lost for me as a player.
