The hard to track down images of Japanese cover of Alundra with the elf boy and several characters around and behind him in dramatic poses.
A snap of part of a feature on the game from issue 34 of my zine: Did Working Designs ruin Alundra? Absolutely not! Thatβs the accepted wisdom, mostly from half-remembered playthroughs back in the day from what I can gather! Yes, Working Designs doubled the health of common enemies and made bosses harder. And they reworked dialogue, added a few now-dated pop culture references, and gave certain kinds of personalities to characters that didnβt have much of one in the Japanese original, such as weed-smoking surfer dude Bonaire. But, from our recent 45-hour playthrough and analysing the game design along the way, we can confidently report that the bulk of the difficulty for Alundra comes from Matrix Software themselves. Working Designsβ HP revisions do make the early game considerably more difficult, with enemies sometimes taking upward of eight hits from the base dagger - annoying! But that difficulty is alleviated considerably about a ΒΌ of the game in and then becomes trivial after that. The perspective and the over-reliance on platforming puzzles that cause the greatest and longest-lasting frustration and difficulty are baked into the design of the game itself and not due to Working Designs.
Happy birthday, Alundra! Released 29 years ago today in Japan.
Still one of my favourite ARPGs. We replayed it late last year to the start of this one, (some of you may remember me posting about it) and it ended up being one of the most eye-opening and thought-provoking revisits of a game to date.
Also - it's my birthday! Sharing these or any other articles of mine, or a link to my site kimimithegameeatingshemonster.com, helps a lot!
And if you really want to make my day and help me stay writing, a subscription of any amount really does make a huge difference!

A scan of an aged letter with some crumpled folds, with Adam writing to Atari about being excited about their computer. He writes about the Atari easter egg as a PS with a diagram of how he does it.

Developer Warren Robinett snuck a hidden message into the game, unhappy with Atari's non-crediting policy. They were made aware of it by Adam Clayton, whose letter has been preserved.

The Time for Judgement Has Come: Shadow Hearts!
The start of a new trilogy on PS2 in 2001, following on from the release of Koudelka. And as a fan of pre-rendered background graphics, I'm particularly fond of Shadow Hearts.
Love Signalis so much! ππ
