Interesting piece claiming that the asymmetry between writing acceleration and review acceleration is breaking science. Essentially Brandolini’s law (The amount of energy needed to refute bs is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it) applied to science publishing >

Plot showing GRFP awards by directorate shows a big dip last year and major increases for engineering and biology (though this only brings it back to parity with 2024).
The NSF GRFP is now out! There are 2,599 awardees, which is the most ever—and a big shift from last year which initially halved awardees (1,000 awardees + an additional 500).
I've thrown together a plot to break down the changes by field.

yeah
we're struggling with author validation/verification
and the simplest way forward to take some of the pressure off is peer-to-peer verification
co-authors should make accounts on arxiv
and claim the papers they are on
then if/when co-authors are submitting authors they are in and verified
take ownership and tell all your co-authors to do so also
and submitting authors should share claim codes
we are running eternal battles with ever cleverer bots,
and we are aided by some serious players
mostly a combination of "but, my needs are urgent..." combined with did not RTFM
and, sadly, mostly script kiddies who don't really know better
pls send CoC complaint to arXiv
it is not you

Terry Tao uploaded to ArXiv a longer version of a Blackwell Companion to the Philosophy of Mathematics paper he co-authored with Tanya Klowden on the philosophical implications of AI for mathematics. 🧵
Excellent blog post on AI and science!

A Table showing the number of positions posted at AAS job-registed for various categories.
Looking at the AAS jobregister lately, it seemed to me that there are less positions available in all categories than in previous years. Wanting to quantify, I used the wayback machine to check on the number of postings in the January-March window and it is quite depressing.
the membership for universities is voluntary and only a few hundred universities are members

look at biorxiv/medrxiv recent move to OpenRxiv
and that it is complicated for non-US funding institutions to provide significant funding to US universities
arXiv has quite strong governance and decisions go through a lot of advisory levels from different stakeholders
🤣
yes, you may ask, and I ought to answer
but, Cornell would like to officially say stuff
the job ad had to go out and provide context before the announcement for the underlying action was ready
