@readtheworld.bsky.social Just checking if the website is down? It keeps coming back "access denied" when I try to log in...

I've been soooooooo busy this past month but I have been keeping up, albeit in a lurky kind of way. This is the season wrap up. If you love A Christmas Carol, or even if you're just interested, I cannot recommend this podcast enough. So much fun.

Book cover shows the face of a woman with dark hair and dark eyes, looking serious. The title is "I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala." A quote from a review reads, "A moving account of gruesome repression, gut-wrenching poverty and vicious racism... A call to conscience," attributed to The Nation.

Poor BlueSky. You remain utterly ignored until I finish another book.

The cover of "The Slave Yards" by Najwa Bin Shatwan, translated from Arabic by Nancy Roberts. Shows a woman's head with traditional headdress in profile, against a dark background.

Well that was all kinds of heartbreaking.

Really enjoyed this. There are two things I personally add to any comparison - in the Marley scene. First, the line, "It is required of every man..." That touches my soul every time. But more than that, the whole, "Business??? Mankind was my business..." speech. THAT is a dealbreaker for me :D.

In Canada. No idea if that makes any difference. Our content is often different from yours on the streaming services though.

That's wild, thank you for letting me know about all this. I was actually watching it on Disney plus, just fyi.

Also now I can't get Midnight Train to Georgia out of my head.

I thought maybe GK and the Pips disbanded in 1983 or around then but I looked it up and 1989, so I guess somebody was unhappy with a recent album they released or something? Too funny. I'm super curious about the other two as well. So fun.

For just a minute you can see. One obviously says Gladys Knight & the Pips (what????) One says "RIP Bob Wills. The King of ???" One looks like "RIP Warren somebody." I haven't googled, but they must be some kind of Disney Easter egg? HOW HAVE I NEVER NOTICED THIS???

I enjoyed this so much. Super excited the regular podcast is back. I have a question for you! Have you ever noticed the gravestones in the grave digging scene? I was watching extra carefully in preparation for listening to this episode and this was the first time I saw...

Shows the cover of the book "M for Amnesia" by Anne-Marie Reuter. White background with the title and author in simple black print. A square of gray fades away to nothing, left to right, across the page.

My first sci fi book as part of the challenge! Also, October marks 18 months. I'm proud of myself.

Am I going to join the Patreon of my favourite podcast? Oh hell yes, I am.

Following from the last of @scroogepod.bsky.social 's deep dive into A Christmas Carol, one of my favourite lines in the book:

"Shaving was not an easy task, for his hand continued to shake very much; and shaving requires attention, even when you don't dance while you are at it."

Such joy.

"And I realise I'm now giving footnotes on my footnotes..." 😂This podcast is a delight.

As is the final stave. Hearing it read out loud brings such life to the words and reminds me of little pieces that I have loved over the years.

This is epic, and getting me through until season 2 in November! Can't wait! Mickey Mouse to the Muppets ❤️.

For now, here's the deep dive into the last of the spirits. I've read this book many times in my life, have given it serious thought. And still I'm learning things in this series! Love it.

Having basically fruit for lunch. I get so excited with all the summer fresh fruit and buy with careless abandon, forgetting that I live alone.

And then it starts to go bad... 😩

Nothing feels as good as when you're home from the beach, freshly-showered, jammied up, with a snack on the couch. This is what summer is about.

Shows the cover of the book "Calling Magic: A Court of Wizards story" by Kummam Al-Maadeed. Bottom of cover shows what looks like a bunch of interlocking gears, from which purple streams of something seem to be appearing.
