"We weren’t on the same page or organized."
At the Frost Bank Center on Tuesday, the Spurs learned a painful lesson in how quickly playoff momentum can swing.
More on their Game 2 loss in my latest for @sbnation.bsky.social ⬇
Victor is more of Durant/Dirk hybrid player. He's not a Duncan post-type player
Devin Vassell on Scoot Henderson: "We need to be more physical with him. He's way too comfortable right now."
Per NBA guidelines, Wembanyama must now have at least 48 hours of inactivity and recovery, then hit several benchmarks while being symptom-free before he is cleared to play. He'll then require clearance from a team doctor in consultation with a league protocol director.
"I thought we weren't as poised as we were in Game 1," Johnson said. "We weren't as sharp to start the game tonight. We weren't on the same page or organized. We'll be better in Game 3.
In addition to Mitch Johnson’s answer to @tomorsborn.bsky.social at the presser, two other Spurs officials have been even more definitive:
Wemby did not break his jaw. He did not go to the hospital. No matter what you read on the Internet.
Mitch Johnson to @tomorsborn.bsky.social when asked if Wemby is being examined for anything other than a concussion: "No."
Appreciate it!
Mitch Johnson confirms Victor Wembanyama has been diagnosed with a concussion. He will now undergo the 48-hour minimum recovery period, beginning tonight. His status for Game 3 is TBD, but may depend on if he passes any tests.
Devin Vassell's three rims out as the Spurs fall 106-103 to Portland to even the series 1-1. Portland closes the game on a 27-10 run after trailing by 14 points with 8:35 left.
Spurs down 106-103 with 5.2 seconds left in regulation.
11.4 left in regulation. Spurs down 104-101 with the ball. Let's see what gets drawn up in this timeout.
Barnes is now on the Spurs' bench. Good sign.
Barnes is on the bike in the tunnel and is hopefully okay. Dylan Harper is clutching his Dylan Harper is holding his left thumb, the same thumb he injured previously this season.
Harrison Barnes straight to the locker room after holding his wrist. Meanwhile, Luke Kornet gets the hoop and the harm. Spurs up 93-79 with 8:28 left in regulation.
Spurs turning defense into offense, fueling a 7-0 run. Portland calls timeout and De'Aaron Fox will go to the free throw line for one shot after the break. Spurs up 87-79 with 9:33 left in regulation.
If you take a look at this series schedule and start counting recovery days, seems like a pretty meaningful quarter coming up.
End of 3Q: Spurs 80, Portland 79
Spurs win the 3Q 23-22 but Steph Castle shooting just 37% for the game. A nice quarter for Dylan Harper, who has 10 points. De'Aaron Fox with 13 points.
Portland calls timeout as the Spurs come out aggressive, leading 63-57. De'Aaron Fox finding his shot with Wemby out and has 13 points.
Luke Kornet starts the second half in place of Victor Wembanyama, who is being evaluated for a concussion.
End of 1Q: Spurs 28, Portland 27
San Antonio closes the 1Q on an 18-5 run to take the one-point lead. Nice response to the Portland start to erase their 13-point lead.
Spurs getting their first taste of playoff adjustments as Portland is clogging the paint on drives by Castle and Harper as well as lobs to Wemby. Portland leading 22-11 in the 1Q
Portland jumps out to a 13-4 start, shooting 60% from three as Mitch Johnson needs a timeout.
Victor Wembanyama was introduced as the "2026 Defensive Player of the Year"
Starting tonight for the Spurs in Game 2:
⚪️ Victor Wembanyama
⚪️ Julian Champagnie
⚪️ Devin Vassell
⚪️ Stephon Castle
⚪️ De'Aaron Fox
If the Spurs win in 5, I think whoever wins the MIN/DEN series will have little in the tank for the second round
What a game! After being down 19 points, Minnesota ties this series and is going home for the next two. I think this might go all 7.
Ant definitely shooting this one, right?
Golbert with two huge stops on Joker. It's why he's a 4x DPOY.
