Posts by Whitney Hill | Shadows of Otherside series

A piece of work that came out of that time: "Stories have power. They convey important information and in so doing, shape our perception and understanding of reality and the other people who inhabit it with us."

Twilight Covenant | Whitney Hill

"A body could only be that scared for so long before it died...or did something about it."

If you're in a burn-it-down mood, the last book in my Shadows of Otherside series might scratch that itch πŸ‘‡πŸΎ

Which is how I came to be an author, really

Writing the stories I wish I had at age 10/11 so someone who looks like me could be the hero of the story instead of the sassy sidekick or disposable cannon fodder (when there was someone who looked like me at all)

I was thinking about what gifts people used to give to readers (besides gift editions of famous poets' work and illustrated histories of wars and such), and while I was thinking about it, somebody brought a book to the counter....

I may be just one small indie author, but I have to hope if enough authors (and readers) do the same, they'll realize they won't have much of a Kindle store if it's overtaken by AI slop books because the real authors are leaving.

I refuse to roll over and act like AI is inevitable.

I've reached out to Amazon/KDP Author Experience Manager directly to convey all this as well.

If I do end up unpublishing from Amazon, paperbacks are still available and (for now) ebooks are also available via Kobo, Apple Books, B&N, Smashwords, and library/borrow services.

My books will also always be available directly from me: whwrites.com/shop

I love being an indie author and sharing my stories. I hate that these mega corporations have both authors and readers over a barrel on a technology that many people didn't ask for and don't want.

It breaks my heart that I have to even consider this.

I pulled my audiobook from Findaway Voices after they pulled their AI shit, and I stopped publishing new books to Google Books when they gave me the runaround about whether my books were being used to train Google's AI.

I'm reading up on the new genAI features coming to Kindle with a great deal of dismay. Authors/publishers can't opt out of having our books scraped for these features, and we're sure as hell not being compensated for their use.

I encourage authors to reach out to me if they're considering working with someone who claims to have worked on one of my books. This is the second time (that I'm aware of) that my books are being used as part of a scam and I'm always happy to verify whether I've worked with a person or company.

Anthropic Settles High-Profile AI Copyright Lawsuit Brought By Book Authors Anthropic faced the prospect of more than $1 trillion in damages, a sum that could have threatened the company’s survival if the case went to trial.

NEW: A major AI copyright legal showdown just took a huge twist today. Facing a class action on behalf of book authors that could've seen it pay over a TRILLION in damages for alleged piracy, Anthropic has agreed to settle instead: www.wired.com/story/anthro...

Screenshot of an email SFWA members were encouraged to share widely, which reads in part: "This summer, SFWA and other members of the Authors Coalition of America (ACA) have been involved in legal proceedings against Anthropic AI, which was trained on books downloaded from pirate websites.

The good news for authors is that Anthropic is now going to trial so the court can determine the amount of damages they will be liable for because of their use of our pirated books.

The court has decided this is not fair use, and a class-action lawsuit is now underway.

SFWA is now being subpoenaed for contact information from past and present members. This data will be used by lawyers to contact potential participants who fit the definition for this class-action lawsuit, so they can receive monetary damages.

You can find a partial list of pirated books used for Anthropic AI here."

Monthly reminder: Many people have a book in them, but it takes a special kind of freak to leave the Land of Laziness, cross the Plains of Procrastination and Insecurity Mountain, find the Blade of No One Made You Do This, and use it to cut your chest open and yank that book out.

To whom it may concern, and it should concern the editor:

I was quoted in your publication:

https://cosmosmagazine.com/earth/oceans/can-we-engineer-our-way-out-of-ocean-acidification/

Still, others aren't convinced that good intentions are enough. Dr. David Ho, Professor of Oceanography at University of Hawaii at Manoa, a cofounder and the Chief Science Officer of |C|Worthy, a non-profit that works on verifying ocean-based carbon dioxide removal, believes carbon removal efforts like ocean alkalinity enhancement shouldn't be left solely in the hands of private companies.

"They have no way to prove that what they're doing is effective - that's a big problem," Dr Ho said.

The crux of the dilemma, he explains, is that we are fighting a planetary-scale problem, but are doing it with tools that are still being built and tested. Geoengineering is not inherently good or bad, but it is inherently powerful. And power, especially when exercised in ecosystems as complex and fragile as the ocean, must be handled with caution.
However, I have never spoken to your reporter, nor would I have said those things. I would like you to remove my quote from your story, and issue a public correction and apology. Furthermore, you should look into whether the other parts of the article are also factually correct. Thanks.

WTF? I was quoted in this story but I have never spoken to the reporter nor would I have said those things. Is everything just generated by LLMs these days?

pink and white notebook with pink and mauve pen next to text which reads Every scene needs four key components on a white background.

Every scene needs:

Obstacle + discomfort + action + consequences

That’s how you create a story with personal stakes, a plot intrinsically linked to your protagonist, and a character arc that gives the protagonist the internal resources they need to overcome the final obstacle.

I've had to dramatically slow down on my fiction writing as I finished up my MA program coursework, started my dissertation, and kept my astrology work going, but I didn't want to let 2025 pass without a new novel coming out. Hoping I'll have it out before the end of the year 🀞🏾

It is a standalone novel set in the Otherside universe, mostly between Ethereal Secrets and Ebon Rebellion. Stay tuned!
