YAYYYYY! Congrats!!❤️ Get margs!
This essay really captures the sensorium of cruising and how the woods are a queer space of wildness—“remote spaces of the unknown wilderness in response to the known violences of the colonial present and the criminal disorder of things,” to quote Ronak Kapadia.
And with this essay, my CRUISING mini-collection is complete

I laundered money! I threw my jeans in the wash with my wallet still in the back pocket
Wrote a bunch, reread it, hated it, deleted it*.

"Global South" is not a perfect term, especially due to the complexities from which it emerged as a substitute of terms such as "Third World." There are also unresolved geographical and historical questions. But one productive point is that an exciting debate continues about its unfixed meaning.

This is so scary. So many colleges face this. What a loss to those students, professors, and staff.

Asha Bhosle was a powerhouse. She shaped my love for Bollywood and my understanding of what genre means. I was lucky enough to be in the front row of her concert back in 2015, when she was 81. She had the entire Fox Theater in ATL on their feet dancing and swaying. She was magnificent.
Edge. Bear your ultimate freedom. (CRUISING IV.)
Oh my god, my friend just asked me what Grey Gardens is. I’ve been prepping for this for like 10 years

I did this once and not a single student read. AND I was being observed.
I asked students what they thought of the reading and they were like “we didn’t read.” I had to do a writing assignment instead, off the cuff. It was fine!
But then: as I was teaching, the projector screen fell to the floor.
This kind of political analysis still myopically centers America. What about the dead in Iran, Lebanon, and Palestine? What about the displaced people? What about the racial violence domestically bc of the imperial behavior abroad?
Exceptionalism causes such tunnel vision. But that’s the point…
