I'm far from the first to acknowledge that we were overly reliant on a Silicon Valley-centric tech scene that has always been proto-fascist and that continuing the work will mean decoupling from them, for good.

The vision shared by many of those of us that have worked in {public interest tech/civic tech/whatever you want to call it}--technology as something that can be liberatory & democratizing--is not wrong.
The latter is particularly jarring: an embrace of technosolutionism 100% at odds with the lessons learned by actual practitioners about the real nature of this kind of work and the value of human expertise.
People once lauded for their desire to use technology to improve people's lives are now openly & persistently advocating for decimating public sector unions as well as replacing workers with generative AI trained on stolen works.

Genuary 30: oops all bugs, a collection of interesting glitches that accumulated throughout the month while working on other sketches
#genuary #genuary2026 #genuary30
At the beginning of the month I thought the library was close to ready, but spending all month with it made me realize there are 2-3 big things I want to do before stabilizing the API. I also added a lot of features as I went, but most are poorly documented.
It's been fun sharing these & seeing everyone else's all month!
my HTML-only #genuary28 will be the polished/updated version of the site & docs for honeycombs/h9.js, the library I've been using for all of these, but that'll probably be in a few weeks.
most of the work on this one was an experimental WebGL renderer backend, honeycombs/h9.js now has SVG, canvas, and WebGL renderers.

felt fitting to demonstrate w/ a return to one shape one color.

There is no separating the two, not anymore.
Unlike the near-impossibility that is giving up factory-farmed food or decoupling your life from our suicidal dependence on oil, giving up big tech is mostly a matter of inconvenience, not survival, and we need to get real with ourselves & one another.
When there are real people being terrorized hurt and killed it can seem like a distraction, but the fight against fascism is the fight against the oligarchs that prefer it, fund it, and support it with their technology.
Nobody can blame you if you aren't out in the streets facing down armed thugs, but it is time to convince our friends & families that they need to stop pouring money into the hate machine.
While we're at it, we need to have a serious conversation about the relationship of big tech to all of this.
Not just Musk. Google. Meta. Amazon.
All complicit allies of this criminal regime, with vast amounts of data on every person on this planet.
There is no path forward for democracy in this country where ICE is intact and those that led, funded, and supported it walk free.
Dismantling this before it gets worse needs to be the highest priority.

definitely more fun to watch the interactive than the gif:

infinite cycles of death & rebirth
This one was really short since h9 already had a polar coordinate reference system built in. 7 variables and a 2-line draw loop! Code here:

#genuary2026 #genuary #genuary4 I'm using these prompts to iterate on h9, which is a mostly-SVG-based
geometric drawing tool, so this one posed an interesting challenge.
I decided I'd take the opportunity to try out my hardly-used Canvas backend and adapted a vector sketch to this pixelated look
Third prompt, fibonacci -- tried to use it for every decision in this quick animation: color, rotation, length, arcDegrees & speed

Today's prompt was the 12 principles of animation. Focusing on slow-in/slow-out and bounce/stretch, I added some basic keyframe code to the variable system to get a nice bounce. The ellipse code was fortunately already done

I'm using Genuary to kick the tires/build features on an experimental drawing library I've been working on.
Today's prompt: One color, one shape. (hexagons of course!)

I wanted something I could recommend to people that just want a reliable way to host static websites with minimal fuss & cost. I wound up writing a script to sync your static site with a low-cost CDN
jpt.sh/posts/host-s...
I'm now using it to host ~15 static websites for $1/mo without Google/MS/CF
Both of the co-founders of Turning Point USA died from things that were preventable, but which they mocked and urged this nation to ignore. Bill Montgomery was killed in 2020 by COVID and Charlie Kirk was killed in 2025 by gun violence.
The protest march in Chicago - the second in only four days staged in opposition to the Trump admin's targeteting of Chicagoland for an immigration blitz - has stepped off from Congress Plaza and is heading north down Michigan Avenue. Hundreds of people have joined the march so far.
