Huge plumes of smoke blanket swaths of the Southeast as crews battle rapidly growing wildfires that have destroyed more than 50 homes in Georgia and forced hundreds to flee the drought- and wind-fueled flames.

Wildfires continue to expand across parts of GA/FL with more than 50 homes destroyed by a wildfire in SE GA. Fire danger concerns will also plague parts of the central US the next several days as severe weather risks also increase. open.substack.com/pub/balanced...

Boy, sure am glad the Blues don't have Ivan Barbashev anymore
Holy shit that was a rifle shot in Tampa Bay
Night two of the Pineland Road Fire being blown out to the west by a sea breeze front. Rough satellite estimates prior to this had it near 30,000 acres. Suspect it makes headlines tomorrow as smoke travels up I-75 tonight towards Macon and the Atlanta metro.
New Gallup poll just dropped — and the contradiction is wild. 63% say we're not doing enough. 55% don't think it'll hit them personally. Spoiler: it already has.
Big Oil to blame for that 55%.

I think ours had red covers but yes
Partially - but TBQH chronic neglect as well
Can someone for the love of God please explain to me how his followers think he is some brilliant, art of the deal tough guy.
Thanks! I figured y'all had KILN data locally but was not aware that the TDWR stuff was totally unavailable. Yes, from what I saw it looked like CLE handled things well!
Last month, an NWS office lost comms for hours during a severe weather episode, forcing another office also dealing with severe weather to handle services for two offices - agency infrastructure and staffing vulnerabilities run much deeper than just upper air balloons. More: tinyurl.com/nbw2mvse
A map of the departure from normal precipitation across the contiguous United States over the past 30 days as of April 21, 2026.
We've seen a dramatic split-screen in conditions across the eastern U.S. in recent weeks, as heavy rains drench the Midwest and Great Lakes while drought conditions worsen in the southeast.

After a quiet start to April, Debris Ballers are back recapping the last week, including a discussion of the "surprise" KC event and potential impact of missing upper air data. But the real highlights are hearing John Gordon talk about briefing Special Forces & meeting my dog.

“Today, many schools and libraries rely on books from companies like Scholastic Inc.—often filled with confusing, political, or even inappropriate messages for children.”
“Inappropriate messages” like slavery is bad, trans people exist, women are autonomous beings.
What a great game!
No dog in the hunt, this is unreal drama. I do think despite what Bucci keeps saying that it was the correct call, thought in real time Staal was offsides and it seemed pretty clear he did not have clear possession of the puck as he came across the line.
Holy shit, insanity in Raleigh. Stanley Cup Playoff hockey truly is the best.

Wrote a little bit about the above/below normal dipole this morning. You can do some really cool stuff with that NSSL monitoring page.

This dog rescue had a slumber party night where volunteers got to sleep with a dog up for adoption!
This is the kind of place I’d donate my time and money to.

(Good) news: NOAA funding for Univ. of Colorado scientists working for Global Monitoring Lab was released last week, preventing furloughs and allowing atmospheric monitoring work to continue. I also take a look at how unusual the severe wx in the upper Midwest has been. tinyurl.com/2n57tcm7
A new language for climate change was voted in: “kokushobi” heat, >40°C (104°F), from the Japanese word koku, meaning harsh or cruel. 2nd choice for the new heat term was ‘super-extremely hot day’ or ‘cho-mosho-bi’, while ‘sauna day’, ‘stay-at-home day’ and ‘boiling day’ were also among the choices.
This is the point. Make universities uninhabitable for the people that make universities wonderful.
Texas Tech faculty are “close to the brink,” Schiller said. “It’s a nightmare … Tears are commonplace. I have a colleague who told me recently that going to campus felt like attending a wake.”
SCOOP --> Paramount, Meta, and X are refusing to say what happened to their huge contributions to Trump's presidential library after Sen Elizabeth Warren raised questions about its fund getting dissolved. Ds say tens of millions remain unaccounted for.

“If” sea levels continue to rise
I truly believe that humanity ultimately at its core is about our spirit and souls, and as such stretching our species’ wings in space exploration is truly one of the most important and profound activities we can undertake. We need to support it as best we can amongst our many priorities.
